Refried Black Beans
REFRIED BLACK BEANS RECIPE
FULL RECIPE
Homemade Refried Black Beans are not only healthier, but indescribably rich. Despite it’s simple ingredients, this recipe packs big creamy flavor with a perfect smooth texture.
COOKING TIPS
This recipe is gluten free, dairy free, and vegan.
BEANS NEED TO BE SOAKED! This recipe will not work if the beans are not soaked first. Soak for 4-12 hours with 1 tablespoon salt. Forgot to soak your beans? Check in the post above for a faster method.
Old beans cook slower! Beans have a long shelf life, but the longer the beans have been sitting on the shelf, the longer they need to cook. If your beans have not softened by the end of the cook time, add a little more water and continue cooking for 30 minutes at a time until they’re soft.
Can use pinto beans instead.

ingredients:
1 lb dry black beans, sorted and rinsed
5 cups water
1 onion diced
2 jalapeños chopped
4 garlic cloves chopped
4 bay leaves
2 tsp cumin
2 tsp chili powder
small pinch of salt to taste if desired - I only used 1/2 tsp of Trader Joes chicken less seasoning salt
press manual or pressure cook and set time to 45 minutes. I did a full natural release for about 20 minutes. When its done scoop out some of the excess liquid or turn the instant pot on saute and let it boil off. blend with an immersion blender to the consistency you like.
if you want to use pinto beans instead you can take off 5 minutes of time, they cook faster than black beans.
