How To make Bread In Jars: Gingerbread
Supplies Needed:
5 jars Ball (#14400-81400) -- (12 oz)
8 new lids - don't use old ones
8 rings okay to use old ones
Batter:
2 1/4 c unbleached flour
3/4 c granulated sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsps ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
3/4 c margarine -- softened
3/4 c water
1/2 c molasses
Preheat oven at 325. Place a baking sheet onto middle rack and remove top rack from oven. Before starting batter, wash jars, lids, and rings in hot soapy wate r and let drain, dry, and cool to room temperature. Generously prepare inside o f jars with margarine. To prepare batter, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, ba king powder, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves in a mixing bowl. In another mi xing bowl, combine margarine, water and molasses. Divide batter among 5 jars (s hould be slightly less than half full). Carefully wipe rims clean, then place j ars on baking sheet (or they'll tip over) in the center of oven. Bake 40 minute s. Keep lids in hot water until they're used. When cakes are done, remove jars which are HOT from oven one at a time. If rims need cleaning, use moistened pap er towel. Carefully put lids and rings in place, then screw tops on tightly shu t. Place jars on a wire rack; they will seal as they cool.
Once jars are cool, decorate with round pieces of cloth and then glue on flowers , ribbons, etc. on lid, ring and side of jar. Unscrew the ring (the lid should be sealed by now) and place a few cotton balls on top of the lid (makes it poofy on top), then a piece of cloth (about 3" larger than the lid) on top and screw the ring back on. Decorate as desired (example pinking shears).

How to Make Gingerbread Cake - The Victorian Way
???? Order your copy of Mrs Crocombe’s cookery book here: ????
Today we're in for a real treat. Mrs Crocombe is making one of her favourite recipes - a cheap and delicious Gingerbread Cake.
Visit Mrs Crocombe's kitchen:
INGREDIENTS
500g flour
200g butter (salted, or add a generous pinch of salt to compensate if unsalted)
200g brown sugar
500g black treacle
10-15g ginger
3 small eggs (or two large)
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
A little warm milk
METHOD
Start by creaming the butter (stirring or beating the butter until it is a smooth, creamy and a uniform texture). Then, add the sugar and spice, ensuring that you mix them in well. Beat the eggs briefly before also adding to them to the mix.
Add flour a little at a time, mixing well between each handful. Pour in the black treacle as you go. A little warm water can be used to get the last of the black treacle out of the bowl. Then, add a pinch of bicarbonate of soda to the warm milk before pouring it into the middle of the bowl and mixing everything together.
Once the mixture is smooth, line a tin with butter and brown paper before pouring the mixture in. Place in the oven for about an hour at 180 degrees Celsius (an inserted knife or skewer should come out clean once the cake is cooked). Once ready, turn out the cake and leave it to cool, then cut into small pieces to serve. For decoration, try dusting with a little plain icing sugar or dipping the cake pieces in some fondant icing.

½ tsp Baking Soda
1 ½ tsp Spice Mix (nutmeg, cinnamon & clove)
1 tsp Ginger Powder
¾ cup Unsalted Butter (room temperature)
½ cup Brown Sugar
2 tbsp Molasses
For Icing:
1 cup Icing Sugar
1 tbsp Water
2-3 drops Lemon Juice (optional)
White Food Color (optional)
Method:
Add the brown sugar in a blender jar & grind it coarsely. Now set it aside.
In a big bowl sieve all the dry ingredients (excluding the brown sugar).
Now in another bowl add the butter & cream it with a blender till smooth.
Once smooth add the coarsely grounded brown sugar & cream it again till it turn fluffy & pale in color.
Now add the molasses & give it a quick whisk.
Next add the dry ingredients, mix well & knead it into soft firm dough as shown in the video. Refrigerate the dough for 15 minutes.
Place the dough between the parchment papers and roll it out evenly.
Using a cookie cutter cut the dough in desired shape & size. Here we have used ginger bread cookie cutter.
Remove the excess very carefully & place them on a lined baking tray. Bake the cookies in pre-heat oven at 160°C for 20 minutes.
In a smaller bowl, add icing sugar, lemon juice, water (gradually) & mix well to form the icing. One ready pipe it into a piping bag.
Once the cookies are baked let them cool & then decorate it using the icing sugar as shown in the video.
