How to Make Hungarian Apple Pie (my great grandma's recipe)
In my livestream today, join me as I make one of my favorite pies my grandma made...Hungarian Apple Pie. This is a simple pie with a tender crust cooked in a 9x13 pan and then cut into 2 squares. Delicious! The ingredients are below. #applepie #hungarian #familyrecipe
Hungarian Apple Pie
Crust Ingredients
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 lb unsalted butter, cut into small chunks
2 egg yolks
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tsp vanilla
Filling ingredients
6 apples (I used Jonathans)
1 cup sugar
2 tbsp flour
Topping ingredients
2 egg whites
1/4 cup walnuts, ground
1 tsp sugar
Whisk together flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. Cut in butter as for pie (I used my Kitchen Aid) until mixture resembles wet sand. Add egg yolks, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix until dough comes together and is smooth. Divide in two equal parts. Refrigerate overnight or while you prepare the apples.
To prepare apples, peel and core the apples. Then slice them thinly with a box grater. In another bowl, combine 1 cup sugar with 2 tbsp flour and set aside.
Roll out one piece of dough to fit the bottom and halfway up the side of a 9x13 pan. Roll out the other piece of dough so it will completely cover when the apples are added.
Sprinkle some sugar/flour mixture over top of the bottom crust. Add 1/2 of the sliced apples. Sprinkle some sugar/flour mixture over top of those apples. Add the remaining apples. Sprinkle more sugar/flour mixture over top of those apples. (I only used a little over half of this sugar/flour mixture) Dot with butter. Then cover with second piece of dough you rolled out. Press down well along edges to seal.
Lightly beat the remaining egg whites and brush some of them over the top crust. Sprinkle the top with ground nuts and a little sugar. In a preheated 400 degree oven, bake for 35 minutes or until nicely browned.
