The Best Irish Soda Bread!
I was so blessed to visit Ireland and I had this delicious and simple bread everywhere I went. There is so many varieties but this recipe is my favorite and closest to what I remember from being in Ireland. This bread can be made with all white bread flour or all whole wheat flour but I prefer the combination of both. I hope you try this recipe and let me know how you like it.
Irish Soda Bread
1 3/4 cup fine ground whole wheat flour
1 3/4 cup of white bread flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 tbsp butter
1 3/4 cup butter milk
1 egg
1 tbsp oats for decoration on top (optional)
Instructions
1. Combine the flours, sugar, salt, baking soda and mix.
2. Add butter and press into the flour mixture using your fingers.
3. Mix the egg into the buttermilk and pour most of the liquid into the flour mixture, reserving a couple tablespoons for the glaze.
4. Mix together and place on a floured surface. Shape the dough into a round loaf, and cut a cross on the top of the dough, and slits in each corner.
5. Take the reserved buttermilk mixture and spread on top of the dough then sprinkle with oats.
6. Transfer to a greased baking sheet and bake in oven at 400 degrees for 40 minutes.
7. Allow to cool for 30 minutes before slicing.
8. Slice, Eat, Enjoy!
