How To make Apple Tuna Pasta Casserole
2 c Macaroni
6 tb Butter or margarine
1/4 c All-purpose flour
3 c Milk
2 c Processed american cheese
2 c Tuna in water; drained
2 c Tart apples; core/dice
2 tb Butter or margarine; melted
1/2 c Bread crumbs; soft
Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain. In saucepan, melt 6 tb butter or margarine over low heat. Blend in flour and 3/4 ts salt. Add milk all at once. Cook quickly, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and bubbles. Add cheese; stir until cheese is melted. Stir in tuna, diced apples and drained macaroni; turn into 12x7x2 inch baking dish. Combine melted butter and crumbs. Sprinkle on top of casserole. Bake in 350~ oven for 30 minutes, or until apples are tender.

Tuna Mornay is a less fuss dish that can be treated as an emergency dish that can be created with a few staples in the pantry. Tuna is directly out of the can, and no time is taken to flake them off. To add extra freshness to the dish, we added fresh parsley and cos lettuce from our garden. We have chosen to bake the dish a little runny to keep our children happy; however, it can be baked less moist by not adding the pasta boiled water.

Ingredients
Macaroni – 450g
Tasty cheese -500g
1 large canned Tuna (425g)
Butter – 80g
2 cups of cow’s milk
About 2 cups of mashed potatoes boiled in salted water and skin off (optional)
2Tbsp ground pepper
1Tbsp chilli powder
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 cup of sweet corn or 1 can of sweet corn drained
1 cup of green peas
4 Tbsp of white flour
1 onion – finely diced
A handful of parsley finely chopped
A handful of baby cos lettuce to serve
2 cloves of garlic
Zest of ½ a lemon
Salt to taste
Process:
1. Heat up the pan under medium heat and add 80g of butter
2. Once butter started to melt, add 1 Tbsp of olive oil
3. Add 1 finely chopped onion and mix well to combine
4. Add two cloves of minced garlic and mix well until everything is combined
5. Add ½ of lemon zest and mix
6. Add a handful of chopped parsley, give a quick mix and add 4 Tbsp of white flour and saute for about 2 min until flour is cooked under low to medium heat
7. Mix well until everything is combined, add 1 Tbsp of chilli powder and 2 Tbsp of ground pepper, and give a good mix
8. Add 2 cups of cow’s milk and whisk well+
9. Add ½ Tbsp of salt, 1 Tbsp of garlic powder and whisk again. When the sauce coats the spoon well, the sauce is ready
10. Add about 2 cups of mashed potatoes boiled in salted water and skin off (this step is optional)
11. Add 1 large, canned Tuna (425g) – drained and flaked
12. Add I cup of sweet corn or 1 can of sweet corn (drained)
13. Add 1 cup of green peas, mix well until everything is combined well
14. If you like the pasta to be moist, adjust the consistency by adding a little bit of boiled pasta water
15. Add 450g of macaroni cooked to al dente and give a rough mix before adding cheese
16. Add 300g of tasty cheese and mix well until everything is combined
17. Taste and add salt to your liking and mix well.
18. Add macaroni to a baking tray and roughly level it, then sprinkle 200g of tasty cheese
19. Sprinkle a handful of chopped parsley and bake at 1800c for 25-30 minutes or until golden
20. Take it out of the oven and let it cool for your liking before serving (at least 5-10 minutes)

My Tuna pasta bake will feed a family for LESS than £6!
Tuna pasta bake is one of my childhood faves. We ate a lot of pasta bakes as a kid, because they were filling, and cheap. There was certainly not a lot of money going around and so more often than not, it was the cheaper meals that we ate. But cheap doesn't have to mean crap. You'd be surprised what you can do with just a handful of store cupboard ingredients and a little bit of know-how.
What's also good about my tuna pasta bake is you can switch out ingredients. Got some leftover ham that needs using up? Wang it in! Only got spring onions instead of white onion? Use those instead. You can get really creative once you know how to get the base sauce done, and learning just a few tricks. Remember, cheap doesn't mean bad, i'm cheap and I am delicious af!
To make my family tuna pasta bake you will need:
Costings are from the Tesco website, so prices may vary slightly depending where you shop.
►500g of fusilli pasta £0.53 (Tesco own brand)
►250g mature cheddar cheese £1.25, half for sauce half for topping (Tesco own brand 400g block is £2.00)
►200g of canned sweetcorn drained £0.35 (Tesco own brand 325g can is £0.55)
►650ml of whole milk £0.40 (Tesco own brand whole milk 2 pints is £0.80)
► 2 x 145g canned tuna chunks in water (Tesco £0.79 each)
►1 small onion £0.10 (Tesco loose onions £0.10 each)
►200g of frozen peas About £0.12 (Tesco growers harvest £0.55 for 900g)
►4 rashers of smoked bacon about £0.85 (Tesco own brand smoked bacon 300g £1.50)
►50g of plain flour £0.02 (Tesco own brand plain flour £0.60 for 1.5kg)
►50g of butter £0.30 (Tesco own brand butter £1.48 for 250g)
►Salt & pepper
