Yacht rock aside, the origins of the Piña Colada are a bit murky. Legend holds that it's roots are with a pirate by the name of Roberto Cofresí who mixed rum with pineapple and coconut to improve the morale of his crew. I have no doubt that it worked, but I have a hard time buying into there being a straight line between there and the Lito Deck of a modern cruise ship. Some people look down on this drink, consider it to be unsophisticated and unworthy. Those people are wrong, the Piña Colada is incredibly enjoyable. I wonder if they hold the same disdain for a soft serve cone with chocolate sprinkles?
The key ingredient in a Piña Colada is something called Creme of Coconut, most commonly available commercial via Coco Lopez or Coco Réal. Both of these products do the trick and taste great, but neither can be called Craft or Natural. There are recipe's for homemade versions, I can't swear by them, I haven't tested them yet. But if that's of interest to you, I'll provide a link to a recipe in the comments.
