Sesame Chicken | Easy Dinner Idea
Today I’m sharing a lightened up version of Sesame Chicken. This recipe is an old favorite of mine from Ellie Krieger. I’ve made a few changes, but the result is flavorful, take-out at home—perfect for a weeknight dinner.
ORANGE CHICKEN video:
Healthy Sesame Chicken
(adapted from Healthy Appetite with Ellie Krieger)
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, diced into bite-sized pieces
5 Tbsp. low sodium soy sauce
4 tsp. toasted sesame oil
2 tsp. honey
6 tsp. olive oil
1 ½ c. chicken broth
¼ tsp. dried ginger
1 Tbsp. rice vinegar
3 Tbsp. sugar
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
6 green onions, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
pinch of red chili flakes
sesame seeds for garnish
Place the chicken pieces into a gallon sized Ziplock bag. Add 3 Tbsp. soy sauce, 2 tsp. sesame oil, and 2 tsp. honey. Close bag and squish everything around to coat the chicken. Refrigerate for 20-30 minutes to marinate. Whisk the chicken broth, dried ginger, 2 Tbsp. soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, and cornstarch together until combined. In a large skillet, add 2 tsp. olive oil. Use a slotted spoon to remove half of the chicken from the marinade and sauté over medium high heat until golden and cooked through. Remove the first batch of chicken to a plate. Add 2 more tsp. of olive oil and the rest of the chicken and sauté until golden and cooked through. Remove this chicken and carefully wipe out the skillet with a paper towel. Add the remaining 2 tsp. of olive oil and cook the white and half of the green parts of the green onions (reserving the remaining green onions for garnish) along with the garlic and a pinch of red chili flakes. Sauté over medium heat for a minute or until fragrant. Whisk the sauce again to redistribute the cornstarch then pour into the skillet, stirring constantly to prevent any lumps. Bring the sauce to a simmer and allow to thicken. Add the remaining 2 tsp. of sesame oil and stir to combine. Add the chicken back in. Stir to coat the chicken in sauce. Serve over rice and garnish with sesame seeds and reserved green onions. ENJOY!
