How To make Fry Bread, My Personal Recipe (Baking Powder Recipe)
1 1/2 c Unbleached flour
1 c Whole wheat flour
1 Half cup cornmeal
4 tb Baking powder
2 tb Sugar
1 Fourth teaspoon salt
1 c Warm milk (water can be
Substituted if desired) Oil or Shortening for Frying
Fry bread is one of the most popular and widespread of the modern Native American Indian foods. There are two main types of this bread that are used for everything from a quick snack to an everyday dinner bread. In the North and East regions, a fried yeast bread is most popular, while in the South and west regions a recipe utilizing baking powder in lieu of yeast is the more common form. In Texas the Alabama-Coushatta use the same recipe as the Navajo Fry Bread listed below.
In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk and knead briefly with lightly oiled hands until smooth. Rub the remainder of the one tablespoon of oil over the dough. Cover and let sit in a warm area for about 30 minutes. Either pat or roll out enough dough to fit in the palm of your hand in a circle about one quarter inch thick. Deep fry in a hot 350 degree oil for about one minute per side or until golden brown. Makes 10-12 pieces.
Note: Dough can also be cut into triangles, squares or perfect circles if rolled out and a cookie cutter like device is used. Serve with honey, maple syrup, or as a bread for meals.

In a large bowl add the flour, baking powder, salt, and butter and mix the ingredients around and squeeze the butter into the dry ingredients. Then start to add the liquids to form a dough. Knead until the dough is soft/smooth and well kneaded. Heat the oil on medium high heat in a frying pan. Then its hot, either roll out a piece of the dough into a circle or oval shape, or shape it with your hands instead, then carefully add it into the oil. Depending on how big your pan is you can add 2 or 3 to the pan. Fry them until they are golden on both sides turning once or twice when its puffed up and cooked all the way through, remove from the oil and strain it on paper towels. And repeat the process until all of the breads are fried.
Then make the meat, in a pot add the meat and the onions and seasoning and stir. Cook until the meat is no longer pink, then add the beans and a little water and cook until the beans are cooked and hot and combined with the flavors of the meat mixture.

Learn how to make the most delicious, fluffy fry bread ever. In this video I will be teaching you how to make fry bread. When I lived with my parents I never learned how to make this traditional Navajo fry bread. So I finally decided I wanted to learn and spent many days observing my mom and taking notes as she showed me how to make it. Although my recipe is not 100% identical to hers, I did my best to mimic it but also make it super easy to recreate. I guess you can call it the best of the old and new generations combined. I truly hope you like this recipe and hope you come back time and time again to watch it.
