15 Most Unusual Foods That Only Exist In China
I must admit I’m not a food connoisseur. Besides being able to spiff up a quick tomato sauce for my pasta, or heartwarming chicken soup, there isn’t much else I can muster up in the kitchen. However, if you look towards Asia, you will discover culinary wonders, your mind cannot even fathom. Have you ever eaten a sheep’s penis? What about a live octopus? If you’re curious and you want to see some of the wildest things on Asian menus, keep watching as we count down the 15 most unusual foods that only exist in Asia.

Silkworms
5,000 years ago, Chinese Empress Xi Ling-Shi discovered silk when a silkworm cocoon dropped into her hot cup of tea, according to folklore. She unwrapped the unusual cocoon and realized, after winding the thread around her finger, what a lovely textile it would create. Thus started the story of one of the most prized fabrics in the world. Silkworms are fried in China and Vietnam, and seasoned and boiled in Korea. In South Korea, large cauldrons of boiling brown silkworm pupae are typical sights on the streets and in outdoor marketplaces.
The odor of steam rising from one of these pots is so distinct that I guarantee you'll never forget it if you ever smell it. There are many reasons why insects are ideal for human consumption. They are high in protein, have a low carbon footprint, and they don’t need to be transported long distances to be slaughtered. Honestly though, I think I’ll pass.
Spinach Noodles
A ribbon pasta created with finely chopped spinach is added to the pasta dough while it is being formed. The noodles are medium to dark green in color and have a little spinach flavor. In size and shape, they resemble medium or wide egg noodles. The amount of freeze-dried spinach added to the noodles is sufficient to turn it green, but that's all. When compared to conventional pasta, there isn't enough to provide any nutritional benefits.
Your choice of refined, whole wheat, green, red, long, short, or bow-tie noodles will have little impact. When you look at this woman preparing the spinach noodles, it almost looks like green clay. Once they are cooked, they look quite appetizing, so this is probably something I would consider trying.

Ingredients
4 lb pork shoulder also called pork butt
2 tsp chili powder
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp ground fennel seed (See Note 1)
1/2 tsp celery seed
1 large onion chopped
24 oz root beer (2-12 oz bottles)
24 oz Kansas City Style BBQ sauce or your favorite recipe or store brand
Instructions
Mix the chili, garlic and onion powders, salt, dry mustard, paprika and ground fennel and celery seeds together with a whisk in a small bowl. Rub the pork shoulder all over and press dry rub into the meat. Set aside.
Chop an onion and place in the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the dry rubbed pork shoulder on top of the onions and pour 1 bottle of root beer and your favorite BBQ sauce over the pork. Cover and cook on Low for 8 hours.
Pour 1 bottle of root beer in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and turn to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes until reduced to about 1/3 cup of syrup.
Remove cooked pork to a plate, remove any bone and pull the pork (shred). Set aside.
Pour the onion, root beer and BBQ sauce mixture from slow cooker into the saucepan with the root beer reduction and either use a hand immersion blender or pour it into a blender and purée. Cook and reduce until it is a catsup like consistency and pour over the pulled pork.
Serve the glazed pulled pork on a roll or bun of choice with coleslaw.
Notes
1. Add the chili, garlic and onion powders, salt, dry mustard, paprika and fennel and celery seeds to a spice grinder or food processor and pulse several times to blend if you only have whole fennel seeds to start with. I keep ground fennel seeds on hand in a small airtight container for different spice blends.
