Banana leaf wrapped fish| Kerala fish recipe
This is one of my favourite ways of cooking a white fish simply because all the goodness of the fish and sea isn't lost while cooking it.
Banana leaves protect the delicate fish from overcooking and the fish cooks with steam and stays moist. Fresh herbs add earthy flavours.
There isn't any better or healthier way of eating a fish dish in my opinion.

Mustard Fish Wrapped In Banana Leaf || Easy Recipe || Infinity Platter || 2023
Simple fish recipes are something you should have in your repertoire. This recipe is exactly that. Delicately spiced, extremely flavourful and light, this recipe is quick, easy, unique and fun to make.
Here’s the recipe ????
Ingredients -
1 Kg Murrel fish or Koramenu fish
5 tsp Ginger garlic paste
1 tsp Turmeric
2 tsp Jeera or cumin powder
3 tsp Dhaniya or coriander powder
1.5 tsp Garam masala
Lemon juice of 2 lemons
1 medium Onion
4-6 Green chillies (depending on your spice level)
10 tsp Mustard seeds
Salt to taste
- Place the fish in a big bowl and add ginger garlic paste, turmeric, jeera or cumin powder, dhaniya or coriander powder, garam masala, lemon juice, salt and mix well.
Leave it aside to marinade for atleast 2 hours.
- In a pan, add the oil to which, add onions and sauté for a minute. Add green chillies and sauté until the onions soften and turn lightly brown. This should take a few minutes.
Transfer to a plate and leave aside to cool.
- In a blender, add the mustard seeds and blitz into a fine powder.
- Then add a few table spoons of water and blitz again until it becomes a thick paste.
- Add the mustard paste to a strainer to remove the mustard skins, which add bitterness to the dish.
- Keep stirring until all the mustard is strained.
- In the blender, add the onions and green chillies and blitz into a thick paste.
- To soften the banana leaves, place them in hot water for a few minutes.
- In a pan on low to medium heat, cook only one side of the fish. Once the fish is half cooked on one side, turn off the pan and let’s start wrapping them.
- Take one banana leaf from the hot water, add first a small teaspoon of the onion Chilli paste. On top of that, add a small teaspoon of mustard paste. Place the uncooked side of the fish downwards so that the cooked side is on the top.
Place half a green Chilli on top and let’s wrap it up.
- Fold up the bottom half and then the top half. Fold one side to the top and the other side to the bottom so it’s an even layer around the fish.
- Tie with a fine thread all round and repeat the process for the remaining fish.
- To cook on a grill, just place the fish on medium heat and cook for a few minutes on each side. Depending on the size of your fish, the cooking time will vary so make sure you check and cook accordingly.
- Alternatively, you can also cook them in a pan for a few minutes on each side.
- Once they’re done, open them up and enjoy!
