How To make Jumbles
1 c Butter
1 c Sugar, plus 2 tb
3 Egg whites
Beaten to a froth 2 c Flour
A pinch of salt 1 1/2 ts Cinnamon
1 ts Nutmeg; freshly grated
1 ts Caraway seeds; crushed
3 tb Rosewater
Beat the butter until very light and add the sugar. Beat well, add the egg whites, and continue beating until smooth. Add the flour and seasonings, and beat until smooth. Refrigerate until firm. Flour your hands and your pasteboard, and lay the dough upon it. Take off equal portions from the lamp, and with your hands form them into round rolls, and make them into rings by joining together the two ends of each. Place the jumbles (not so near as to touch,) in tin pans slightly buttered, and bake them in a very brisk oven little more than five or six minutes, or enough to color them a light brown. If the oven is too cool, the jumbles will spread and run into each other. When cold, sift sugar over them. Baking is at 375; time depends on the thickness of the cookie, but more like 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. SOURCE: Biscuits, Spoonbread, and Sweet Potato Pie (pg. 246-247) -----

Buttermilk Jumbles (cookies)
Buttermilk Jumbles were my favorite cookie to get when treated with a trip to Roselyn Bakery as a child.
The source recipe I used is from Honey Bee’s Patisserie where they provide a history of local, Indiana bakery, Roselyn Bakery, which was in business for 56 years:
Roselyn Bakery has an online presence now, run by a couple families who bought the formulas from the original Clark family:
FYI, my sister’s favorite Roselyn Bakery cookie was their Pecan Tea Cookie:
Perhaps I’ll make these in a future video. Would anyone like to see that?
After Roselyn Bakery went out of business, someone produced a cookbook with all their recipes. I didn’t realize at the time that the cookbooks would go out of production because I didn’t know how book production worked, so I didn’t spend money on one. Therefore, I used the internet copycat makers as a source for the recipe.
Making this video inspired a scouring search of the internet for an existing book I could buy….uh, no, I am not spending $150 for a used version on the evil website named after an endangered rain forest! However, I DID find that the roselynrecipe.com site offers a PDF version for $20.
What is your favorite cookie? Do you prefer to make your favorite cookie or buy them? Did you have a preferential bakery from when you were little? How about now?
What other sweet treats would you like me to show on this channel?
I invite you to share your positive thoughts and comments.
Jumbles | Great British Bake Off | Funky Fresh Food
It’s week 8 of the Great British Bake Off, which means another technical challenge. This week we’re going back in time to the Tudor period to make Jumbles. Some are double knots and others are Celtic, but they’re all spiced and zesty! Now I may not have had all the correct ingredients, but at least I made my celtic knots correctly… I’m looking at you Paul Hollywood!
If you want to try your hand at making your own Jumbles then you can find the full recipe here:
