Meet The Shaman Using Ancient Chocolate Rituals To Revive Mayan Traditions | Still Standing
Cacao has been a spiritual symbol for Indigenous people in Central America for thousands of years. When the modern chocolate industry took over, much of the plant's sacred use was lost. Today, people in Guatemala are bringing back the ritual of drinking pure cacao.

What Aztecs Were Eating Before European Contact
The Aztecs thrived in the area corresponding to Mexico between the 14th and 15th centuries until they were overthrown by Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés in 1521. This complex Mesoamerican culture revolved around growing and consuming food, particularly maize (what is now known as corn) - but what else did the Aztecs eat? What did they grow? What did they eat for dessert? How did they cook their food?

Easy Aztec Hot Chocolate (Xocolatl)
Simple hot chocolate recipe from the Aztecs! Chocolate was a really popular drink in the Aztec and Mayan empires, it was brought to Europe by the Spanish and nowadays it's enjoyed all-over the world. This is a simple version with ingredients that were used in chocolate drinks by the Aztecs. The Spanish described the drink and the ingredients used in different versions when they colonized America. Traditionally the drink was made by baking, peeling and grinding the cocoa beans until it formed a paste and then adding the other ingredients. A more practical way is to use unsweetened cocoa powder.
Ingredients:
1 chili pepper
Water 650ml
Vanilla extract 5ml
Cocoa powder 15g
Recipe: chop the pepper and add it to 200ml of water and let it boil for a few minutes. Once the water is boiling, transfer the water to another pot through a sieve to remove the pepper. Add 450ml of water, the vanilla extract and bring it to a boil, then add the cocoa power and mix until it's an even mixture. You can drink it hot or let it cool before drinking. The drink will be a little spicy and watery compared to modern hot chocolate made with milk.

How To Make The Aztec Elixer
The Aztec elixer, a cocktail with smoke from the inclusion of Mezcal. This recipe was hand selected by Jennifer, someone that wouldn't touch Mezcal two years ago and is now finding the smokey flavor desirable.
Some of the base could be confused with a margarita or daiquiri style with the lime juice, triple sec and a bit of a sweetener (in this case, honey). The grapefruit juice brings out additional neat tartness and the smoke follows through as one of the more memorable parts of this shooter.
The crazy thing is... this shooter could be a cocktail itself!
