Easy Homemade Cherry Pie Recipe
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make double cherry slab pie! Begin by preparing the pie crust recipe. Combine 3-3/4 cups of flour, two tablespoons of sugar, and 1-1/2 teaspoons of salt. Use a pastry blender to cut in 3/4 cup of shortening and 1/3 cup of chilled butter into the mixing bowl. Add one tablespoon of water, and use a fork to combine the pie crust ingredients. Push the wet mixture to the side, and repeat until the entire pastry mixture is moist. Gather the mixture into two balls, with one still slightly larger than the other. Wrap both balls in plastic wrap, with about 1/3 of the mixture remaining. Now create the sweet cherry pie filling. Stir together five cups of frozen, pitted, red tart cherries, 3/4 cup of dried tart cherries, one cup of sugar, one cup of corn flakes, and one teaspoon of finely shredded lemon peel. Roll the larger pastry ball between two pieces of waxed paper into a 17 x 12-inch rectangle. Remove the top layer of wax paper, and transfer to a 15 x 10 x 1 inch baking pan. Remove the last piece of wax paper, pressing the pie crust down into the edges of the pan. Smooth the bright cherry pie filling evenly in the pan, and roll the remaining pastry with waxed paper again- this time into a 16 x 11 inch rectangle. Remove the top layer, and for a sweet added touch, cut three to four hearts out of the dough using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Put the dough over the homemade cherry pie and remove the wax paper. Overlap the leftover hearts in any way desired, and finish off this cherry pie recipe by spreading egg whites over the top and sprinkling with coarse sugar. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes. Let the cherry pie cool before you dig in to this easy dessert recipe!
