How To make Peppernuts(Pfeffernussen)
1 c Brown sugar
1/2 c White sugar
1/2 c Shortening
2 Eggs
1 t Vanilla
1 c Raisins
1/2 c Coconut
1/2 c Nuts
4 1/2 c Flour
1 t Baking soda
1/4 ts Salt
1/2 c Sour cream or buttermilk
Cream the white and brown sugar with the shortening. Beat in the eggs and vanilla. Combine the raisins, coconut, and nuts, grind fine in a food processor or grinder. Add to the above. Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt together; add these, along with the buttermilk, to the above. Divide the dough into several parts; roll each part into a long, inch thick snakelike shape; cut the snake at approximately half inch intervals. Arrange the nut-like cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet; bake at 325 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes, depending on whether
you prefer softer or crunchy cookies.

Great Grandma's Peppernuts Recipe - From A Viewer - Glen And Friends Cooking
Great Grandma’s Peppernuts.
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup Karo brown syrup (dark corn syrup)
1 cup whipping cream
4-5 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 ½ tsp ground pepper
Mix flour, pepper, baking soda and Salt together in a small boul. Beat sugar, butter and eggs together in a large bowl. Add the whipping cream, flour /spice mixture and the brown syrup.
Stir until well mixed. Roll into walnut sized balls, put on a pan and bake at 350ºF for 12 minutes. Cool on a rack, store in a covered container.

INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup lard (or vegetable shortening)
- 1 cup molasses
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/4 teaspoon real anise oil
- 1/2 cup sour milk (1 tablespoon vinegar with 1/2 cup milk)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 6 cups flour
DIRECTIONS
In the bowl of a stand mixer, mix the lard and molasses, 30 seconds. Add the sugar, egg, anise oil, sour milk, and mix well, 1 minute. Add baking soda and flour and mix until only a few streaks of flour remain, 1 minute.
Shape into cylindrical rolls approximately 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch in diameter. Chill overnight and cut into 1/4-inch pieces.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool on pan for 5 minutes. Using a spatula, scrape the peppernuts into an airtight container. Store for up to 3 three months in the freezer.
