4 cups flour + 1 tbsp flour
1/4 cup butter (57g)

At first activate the yeast. Combine warm milk, yeast, 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tbsp flour. Mix and let it rest for 10 minutes. Add the yeast mixture to the mixing bowl. Add sugar, warm melted butter, egg, flour, vanilla and salt. Kneed the dough. Cover the dough and let it proof in the warm corner of your kitchen until it doubles in size. For about 1.5 hours.
To make the filling…
Pour boiling water over the poppy seeds so the water covers them completely. Let them sit in the water for 10 minutes. Drain the water and rinse them under cold water. Transfer the poppy seeds to a small pot and add condensed milk. Let it simmer until most of the liquid disappears. Let the filling cool down completely before using.
Dust some flour onto the working surface. Roll out the dough in rectangular shape to about 1/4 of an inch thick. Spread the poppy seed filling evenly. Roll the dough over itself until you will get one long tube. Slice the roll into 16 even pieces.
Transfer to a baking tray lined with a silicon mat. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes. Brush some egg wash and bake at 375F for 25-28 minutes.

Ingredients:
230 g, 1 cup of butter, 2 sticks - room temperature
250 g of cream cheese - room temperature
2 cups all purpose flour
1 /2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup of poppy filling
1/3 cup of plum butter
icing sugar for rolling and serving
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and cream cheese. Mix until smooth.
Mix flour and salt together.
Gradually add in the flour, sifting, beat until a soft dough forms.
Separate dough into 4 balls and wrap each in saran wrap. Refrigerate for 24 hrs.
Preheat your oven to 180 degrees C or 350 degrees F.
Roll out the dough on a surface lightly dusted with powdered sugar until about 1/4-inch thick. Work in small batches, keeping the rest of dough in the fridge. If the dough gets too sticky as you are working with it, place it back in the fridge.
Cut the dough into more or less 6 cm or two-inch squares.
Place about a teaspoon of the plum butter or poppy seed filling in the center of each dough square. Bring two opposite corners of the dough together over the filling to form a roll. Pinch the corners together. You can also place a tsp of filling on a corner of a square and roll it up like a crescent roll.
Place the cookies on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Dust with powdered sugar while warm.
Allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
Enjoy!

Hungarian Kifli Recipe!! Noreen's Kitchen
Greetings! Today is Kifli day in my house. This may not mean much to some of you, but to me it is an annual tradition. Both of my grandmother's, my Mommom (my paternal grandmother) and my Nanny (my maternal grandmother) made this recipe.
Although I don't expect that many of you will undertake this recipe, I wanted to share it. Mostly because my cousin who is 10 years younger than I, saw that I was getting ready to make them and asked me for the recipe. I thought I would do the video to show how it is done, so she could have a place of reference.
Kifli is Hungarian for cookie it can refer to any small sweet treat in that language. But to me Kifli is a flaky pastry dough that is filled with any number of delicious fillings. Today I have made the traditional prune lekvar, apricot, cherry, pineapple and raspberry.
If you decide to try this, make sure that you make the dough the night before and plan on spending at least a half a day making the cookies. They are a labor of love but well worth the effort.
For me, Kifli help me to remember where I came from and also keep a tradition alive. I think we can all get caught up in everyday living that we sometimes forget that the holidays are not about stuff, they are about love. They are about remembering those who are no longer with us and they are about creating memories with our families and our children so that one day they will do the same.
Forgive me for getting so mushy, gushy, but Kifli day is special for me.
Julie, I hope this helps and I hope you give this a try. If you don't make them for Christmas, do them for Easter.
Merry Christmas everyone!
