Notes Vanilla extract I like to use clear vanilla in the filling because it keeps the filling pure white. It also lends itself to a slightly more authentic ding-dong flavor (which I suppose is artificial). You can absolutely substitute classic, real vanilla extract instead. Storing Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The filling is soft, if left in a warm environment for too long it could start to melt and the layers could slide.

Recipe: 1 cooked chocolate cake 1 bag of semi sweet chocolate chips 3/4 cup milk 1 cup butter (softened) 2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon of butter - Crumble entire cake into a large mixing bowl breaking apart larger chunks. Melt 1/2 cup of your chocolate chips and add to bowl as well as your milk. Mix together thoroughly, I used my hands but you can do it however you like. Place mixture onto a large sheet of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Place a second sheet of plastic wrap or parchment paper on top of the mixture and using a rolling pin, roll till the mixture is about 10 inches by 14 inches. Remove the top layer of plastic wrap or parchment paper carefully and set the flattened mixture to the side.
In a second bowl, cream butter, powdered sugar and vanilla together to create your buttercream. Spread the buttercream evenly over your flattened cake mixture.
Very carefully, starting on the shorter end, use the plastic wrap or parchment paper to roll your cake mixture. You want your roll to be tight enough that there is no air gaps but not so tight that it pushes the butter cream out. Put the roll into the freezer to set for 10 to 15 minutes.
Take the rest of your chocolate chips and melt them down adding 1 tablespoon of butter to the mixture. Remove your roll from the freezer and remove the plastic wrap or parchment paper. Pour the melted chocolate over the roll and spread so that it runs down the sides covering the whole of the roll. Place roll into refrigerator until the chocolate is set.
