How To make Haymaker's Switchel
1 c Brown sugar
1/2 ts Ginger
1/2 c Molasses
3/4 c Vinegar
2 qt Water
In haying season, farmers used to take their "nooning" (midday dinner) with them, including a jug of Switchel to wash the meal down. Although Switchel was usually straight, farmers have been known to spike it with hard cider, or even brandy which Down easters usd to say, "got the hay in the barn in half the time." Mix together, add ice and chill.

Switchel
So, you’re wondering what in the world is a Switchel? Well first of all it’s a homemade drink with a super fun name! I’m just learning about switchel’s and all the benefits. It’s probiotic, it boots immunity, and helps build healthy flora in your gut. Explore with me and see if you like it. From my brief research I can see that switchel’s have been around for some time, often called things like haymaker’s punch, swizzle, ginger-water, switchy or switzel. Wow, that was a mouth full. This is basically a vinegar water that we are making palatable so you want to drink it! It’s MUCH easier than kombucha and has similar benefits.
The key to the probiotic benefits is buying apple cider vinegar WITH the mother. So now you’re asking… “what is mother?”. The mother is basically a healthy bacteria. This is a great article I found explaining it
So far me and my daughter love this particular recipe with the ginger and citrus flavors! I did try a molasses, ginger, and lime version and it’s good but I much prefer the citrus and ginger. I think the really fun part about the switchel is the versatility and experimentation you can try. I’m looking forward to trying different flavors and combos. In this instance I had a few blood oranges that needed to be used and this was a great way to use them up.
Put all ingredients in a large jar and fill to the top with water (I used a large size mason jar = 4 cup capacity). Shake! For best flavor refrigerate overnight, but you can certainly drink it right away if you wish.
*for a stronger ginger taste you can boil a cup of the water with ginger. COOL. And then add to the jar. This will add a punch of ginger. Be sure to cool the liquid so it doesn’t kill the bacteria in the apple cider vinegar.
4-5 slices of fresh ginger
1 blood orange (or sub other citrus)
1/2 lemon
1 Tablespoon honey
2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
Water to fill the jar (about 3-4 cups)

Homemade Switchel, Haymaker's Punch Recipe On This Summer Solstice Day
Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping. ???? Would like to welcome you to my backyard this very warm and muggy day. Happy Father's Day goes out to all those who stand up to be fathers and be there for your children. Personally to me it is an everyday celebration not just one day out of the year. The same goes for Mother's Day as well. On this hottest day of the year so far I'd like to say happy summer solstice and it's the first day of summer.
With this being said we each need to take care to stay hydrated when we work outside. This drink called switchel, haymakers punch and or swizzle is a drink that dates back to the 1700s. It was the first known energy drink and it's completely all natural which makes it a wonderful recipe to know how to make.
For those who drink coffee and I am highly guilty most do not know that coffee robs your body of potassium. Using the sorghum helps us to replenish our potassium levels due to coffee and or sweating heavy. The salt we have to have daily because our body does use salt. You just have to be wise about what salt you use. Please do not use table salt because your body does not absorb it and it just holds it in your system and that's what causes high blood pressure. If you use pink Himalayan salt or natural sea salt your body actually uses it and flushes it out of our systems. Of course the vinegar helps our body to absorb all the nutrients in this wonderful drink as well as it helps to build our immune systems while enjoying this drink. Always remember to take breaks in the shade and hydrate while you do so.
Switchel, Haymaker's punch or Swizzle
1/2 teaspoon ground dried ginger or 1 Tablespoon of fresh grated ginger
3 Tablespoons of sorghum, honey or maple syrup
2 Tablespoons elderberry apple cider vinegar with the mother, apple cider vinegar with the mother and or regular apple cider vinegar
1 healthy pinch of pink Himalayan salt or sea salt
Water to fill the jar up
1 quart jar
Hope you find this video informative and it encourages you to make this hydrating drink as well. It does make you feel better after consuming it. Everyone take care go out and have a wonderful day. May you each be blessed.
Blessings,
Teresa

Homemade Switchel
This is a family recipe for switchel. What is switchel you ask? Well i'll tell you! Switchel also know as haymakers punch was a popular drink in the late 17th century. It was made by farmers during harvest time to quench thirst and is where the name haymaker punch comes from. There are a variety of ways to make switchel but basic ingredients are fresh ginger root, apple cider vinegar, honey or molasses, turmeric, and lemon juice. It is a refreshing drink on its own, or as a lemonade, it is even great added to an adult beverage.
Ingredients can be adjusted to taste. If you like a little more zing add more ginger, less zing less ginger, sweeter add more honey not as sweet..........you get the idea. However you make it make it to your liking and hopefully it will add to your health and well being.

Switchel or Haymaker's Punch served in America since the Colonial period consisting of ginger, apple cider vinegar and a sweetener.
The proportions can vary according to your taste. For my three-cup Mason jar, I used:
6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
4 tablespoons of sweetener (agave in mine - you can use honey, maple syrup or molasses)
3/4 teaspoons of ginger.
