Two popular and groovy cocktails from the 1970s both created by marketing consultants to sell more Galliano! The Harvey Wallbanger is one of the most iconic cocktails from the 1970s and is basically a screwdriver with a Galliano float. The drink was so popular it spawned its own Bundt Cake.
The Tropical Standard version of the Yellow Bird stays close to the original. The addition of salt, bitters, and lime cordial intensifies the flavors and overall you end up with an elegant rum cocktail with a small amount of Galliano to create something interesting and tasty.
So what does Galliano taste like? On the nose, it's similar to other alpine liqueurs and reminds me of a much more mellow Chartreuse with a strong peppermint presence. It's astringent and tastes of mint, bitter herbs, and warm spices like cinnamon. While it's often thought of as a vanilla liqueur, it's very subtle. While I said in the video I don't like it, I historically have not liked it but I am coming around to it. I think I might even like it.
The Galliano provides an overall bitter taste to these cocktails but many of the nuances are lost. Galliano lacks that intensity of Chartreuse but that can be a good thing as it helps balance out the Yellow Bird without overpowering.
