History's DISGUSTING Drinks: The Harvey Wallbanger
The Harvey Wallbanger is a variation on a screwdriver, and it has some interesting history. In 1969, Galliano introduced surfer mascot named Harvey Wallbanger to help popularize the spirit. The drink's popularity was sadly due to excellent marketing, rather than it’s flavor.
Galliano has got really strong Black Licorice, Vanilla, and woodsy vibes. Basically the last thing you'd want with orange juice.
It’s not like the drink can’t work, but some special attention needs to be paid to these flavors to make them work together.
Here's the fix:
- 2 ounces Gin
- 3 ounces fresh-squeezed orange juice
- 1/2 ounce lemon juice
- 1/2 ounce @gallianococktails liqueur
- 1 teaspoon simple syrup or rich cane sugar syrup (2:1, cane sugar:water)
Garnish: long curl of orange peel
DIRECTIONS
Express orange peel into an empty Collins glass.
Arrange orange peel inside the glass, using the back of a bar spoon to place the peel inside the glass. Drop in four or five Kold-Draft ice cubes, one by one, to stabilize the peel. Leave the end of the peel hanging over the glass; it should create a decorative “horse’s neck” curl.
Whip-shake all ingredients with ice. (This is a short but vigorous shake designed to create maximum frothiness.)
Strain into prepared glass.
