What is a Baja-style fish taco?
Baja style fish tacos are a regional style of taco found in San Diego and the Baja region of Mexico, just south of San Diego. This kind of fish taco is either grilled or fried and topped with either a creamy or vinegar based slaw.
What is the best fish for fish tacos?
Any white ocean fish will work great for fish tacos. Some common options are mahi mahi, flounder, snapper, grouper, halibut, and cod.
Recipe for Crispy Fish Tacos with Coleslaw
For the batter:
1 cup self rising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
1 1/4 cold cup beer
All ingredients need to be very cold.
Beer and flour ratio will need to be adjusted depending upon your flour.
For the slaw
2 cups thin sliced cabbage
pinch of salt
1 Tablespoon chopped cilantro
1/2 Tablespoon chopped jalapeno
3 Tablespoons Mexican cream
Mix and put in refrigerator 1 hour.

A&Z #971 - Randy Santel Atlas vs The $125 Ugly Grouper Man vs Seafood Challenge w/ Cheesy 2lb Fish Taco at The Ugly Grouper in Holmes Beach, Florida on Anna Maria Island, FL!! @KatinaEatsKilos and I decided to kick off our 2021 food challenge touring in Florida, and our February Florida Tour turned into a February & March Florida Tour!! I attempted lots of food challenges all over the state of Florida. For food challenge #54, we traveled back to Anna Maria Island, Florida so I could attempt and help kick off the Ugly Grouper Man vs Seafood Challenge at The Ugly Grouper which is located in Holmes Beach, AMI, Florida. I had 1 hour to finish lots of tasty items from their menu, including a Randy Santel sized cheesy 2lb blacked grouper fish taco. There was an Ugly Polynesian Boat w/ more blackened grouper plus a grouper sandwich along with lots of appetizers - chicken wings, crab topped fried green tomatoes, shrimp cocktail, and Ugly Cheese Logs (mozzarella sticks). I was trying to win my $125 seafood meal free plus a sweet t-shirt and the 1st spot on The Ugly Grouper's Wall of Fame. Thanks to everyone with The Ugly Grouper for the amazing food, drinks, and hospitality!! Thanks also to the great people who came up that afternoon to watch and meet Katina and I!! We appreciate everyone on Anna Maria Island, FL and around Florida who watches our videos and supports our hard efforts!!

The Ugly Grouper's Man vs Seafood Challenge w/ 2lb Fish Taco in Holmes Beach, Florida ($125):
- The Ugly Grouper is located in the Holmes Beach, Florida area on Anna Maria Island, Florida.
- It has live music every day, is family & pet friendly with local seafood and signature cocktails.
- For this food challenge, I had 1 hour to finish a giant spread of seafood items from the menu.
- The biggest item was a 2lb Randy Santel sized Ugly Grouper Fish Taco with a cheese skirt, loaded with blackened grouper, shredded cabbage, and more.
- Ugly Polynesian Boat - Local Black Grouper served on top of a fresh pineapple boat, rissoto, mixed vegetables, and drizzled with mango habanero salsa.
- Appetizers - Shrimp Cocktail with Ugly Cocktail Sauce (spicy), Crab Topped Fried Green Tomatoes drizzled with a house-made remoulade sauce, Jumbo Dry-Rub Chicken Wings, and 4 Ugly Cheese Logs (mozzarella sticks).
- The challenge also included a blackened grouper sandwich served with seasoned French fries.
- The 2 drinks (Beach Baby and Perfect Margarita) were optional and not required to be finished.
- Winners receive the $125 seafood meal free plus a sweet t-shirt and spot on the Wall of Fame.

The Best Fish for Fish Tacos | Types of Fish for Making Tacos
If you're thinking of making fish tacos for your next Taco Tuesday then you're in for a treat! Fish tacos are one of the easiest types of tacos to put together: all you need is a nice piece of fish, some tortillas, and your favorite taco toppings. But what is the best type of fish to use for fish tacos? The good news is that you can actually make them with just about any fish you like! So whether you prefer salmon; a white fish like haddock, cod, or grouper; or something more dense like swordfish or sea bass, you can't go wrong.
The easiest way to make fish tacos is to season your favorite fish fillets (like salmon, swordfish, or tilapia) with a little salt and pepper or taco seasoning, then sear or grill the fish to your desired doneness. Fill warmed corn or flour tortillas with the fish and top with your favorite taco toppings. Cilantro, pickled onions, cabbage, and guacamole are great choices!
So, what's the best fish for fish tacos?
If you want to make fried fish tacos then we recommend using a bit of a firmer fish. Try cod, mahi mahi, grouper or sea bass for fish tacos and be sure to season the batter well—that's where most of the flavor will come from. Try your fried fish tacos topped with chipotle mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, or chopped fresh onion and cilantro.
