How To make Christmas Stars
COOKIES:
1 c Solid shortening
-(NOT butter) 2/3 c Granulated sugar
2 Eggs
1 t Salt
1 t Vanilla
1 t Almond flavoring
2 3/4 c Flour
FROSTING:
1 1/2 c Powdered sugar
2 tb Cream or milk
1 1/2 ts Vanilla (not Mexican,
-unless you like -tan frosting) Food coloring
Cream together the shortening and sugar. Beat in the eggs, salt and flavorings. Stir in the flour until blended. Chill in the refrigerator for an hour or two. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Roll out on a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Cut with the cookie cutters of your choice (this was always a cause for argument in our family). Bake on ungreased cookie sheets until tan around the edges, about 8-10 minutes. Allow to cool. Make the frosting by beating together the sugar, milk and vanilla until smooth. Divide and color each portion. Frost the cookies. Orange Christmas Stars ????⭐️
These classic windowed biscuits make a lovely treat for the festive season ????. The dough is similar to shortbread, very crisp and buttery. I used marmalade which is popular for us Brits????????, (orange jelly for US). You can make these vegan by subbing the butter for vegan butter. Just make sure the marmalade is vegan friendly.
Ingredients:
125g butter - opt for vegan butter optional
125g plain flour
70g rice flour
60g caster sugar
50g thin cut marmalade (Orange jam) - option to choose any jam filling
Handful orange zest - optional for decoration
This recipe makes 12-15 biscuit sandwiches.

Hi, lovelies, and welcome in my holiday kitchen,
Today we are baking one of my favorite cookies: German Zimntsterne - yummy and festive cinnamon stars. Soft pieces of heaven covered with a delicate meringue frosting. And the best thing, it only needs 4 ingredients, they are gluten-free and you can easily adjust these to make delicious vegan Christmas cookies too!

The recipe originally stems from Swabia - a region in southwest Germany and is popular in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland during the holiday season.
Like many of the traditional holiday and Christmas cookies, this one has been around for quite some time. It was first mentioned in manuscripts from 1536 when the German emperor Karl the 5th visited Kardinal Lorenzo Campeggio in Rom. The document states that a 12-course feast was served, including cinnamon stars, pistachio truffles, anis pralines, and dried candied orange peel - those gentlemen knew how to host a festive Christmas tea party for sure!
It was not until the 18th hundreds until this recipe found its way from the aforementioned fancy Christmas tea table into recipe books to be made by the common folk - cinnamon was an incredibly exotic and expensive spice back in the days and would only be found in the kitchens of the rich and famous.
As I mentioned in my sugar cookie video, the tradition of baking little Christmas cookies stems from the monastery bakeries during the middle ages, and Little baked goods were handed out to the poor as a sign of goodwill during this time.
