Brown Sugar Pecan Pie Recipe ~ Noreen's Kitchen
Greetings! The Holidays Are Coming! Yes they are! Halloween is close and then on to the big guns, Thanksgiving and Christmas! I don't know about you, but Thanksgiving would not be Thanksgiving in our house unless there was a pecan pie on the table! Today I want to share with you how I make my pecan pie with a bit of a twist. This one is a brown sugar pecan pie, made with brown sugar, dark cane syrup and lots of pecans. This makes an amazing, dark and rich pecan pie that you are going to love.
Pecan pie is probably one of the easiest pies to make. Few ingredients that you might even have on hand and a pie shell that you can make from scratch or buy premade. You can use a frozen shell or a refrigerated version that you press into your own pie plate. The day that I made these, I was actually making a birthday pie for one of my daughter's friends who requested it. So I made mine in a very good quality frozen pie shell. I love having these on hand for anytime the moment strikes to throw a quick pie together. You do what you like when you make your pecan pie.
Pecan pie is nothing more than a custard without milk. The milk is replaced with butter and cane syrup or corn syrup if you like and lots of eggs. This bakes a bit longer than you might think so make sure to test the pie when you think it might be done and then return it to the oven like I did for ten minutes if it is just underdone. You don't want to assume it will set as it cools because then you could end up with a mess in the end.
This pie is dark, sweet and rich. A little slice will to a long way and this pie will serve eight easily. Top with a dollop of freshly whipped cream and you are ready to go to dessert heaven! Put this on your table as one of your dessert selections this Thanksgiving and your family will go nuts (get it?) over this pecan pie!
So no matter how you say it Pee-Can or Pea-Caaan, you are going to love this pie! I hope you try this and I hope you love it!
Happy Holiday Eating!

Brown Sugar Pie Recipe ???????????????? | Thanksgiving Pie Series ????
My brown sugar pie recipe is easy and delicious. Similar to chess pie, southern brown sugar pie is basically a pecan pie but without the pecans. This recipe is super simple because all you have to do is mix together a few ingredients for the filling, pour them into an unbaked pie shell, then bake. This pie has a crunchy top and a creamy filling, so the texture contrast is just as pleasant as the flavor. If you are looking for an old fashioned dessert for Thanksgiving that is super easy to make and a bit out of the ordinary, this pie is perfect.
Although my recipe is for a southern style brown sugar pie, there is a similar pie in Canada. It is especially popular in French-speaking Quebec and New Brunswick, and recipes often call for a combination of brown sugar and maple syrup. (If you want to see the Canadian version, check the link below to Jerri-ellen's recipe). I did not see maple syrup in any southern style recipes, but I did notice that even within the southern United States, there are multiple versions of brown sugar pie. Some call for evaporated milk, some sweetened condensed, some even call for topping the pie with meringue. I will have to experiment a bit in the future, but for a first attempt, I wanted to make something similar to a chess pie or pecan pie.
My southern brown sugar pie recipe starts by mixing together light brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and apple cider vinegar. Although the apple cider vinegar sounds odd, it is a common addition in chess pie recipes since it helps to cut the sweetness: this pie is mostly sugar, after all. Once the sugar has lowered the temperature of the melted butter, it is safe to add in the eggs. After everything is combined, pour the filling into an unbaked pie shell and bake. It doesn't get any easy than that...unless I make the pie for you, haha.
However, I was surprised to learn that some versions of this pie do not have eggs! Instead, you combine brown sugar, evaporated milk, butter, and flour on the stove, bringing the mixture to a simmer. You then pour the filling into a pie shell and bake it. You might expect the pie to not holds its shape when cut, but from what I saw on YouTube, the pie definitely holds it shape when cut. I guess the eggless version is similar to Depression-era water pie...and is another recipe I will have to do soon.
This southern brown sugar pie was amazing! Like I said earlier, it tasted like pecan pie but without the pecans. With the filling being almost all sugar, you might expect the pie to lack flavor. However, the molasses in the brown sugar added a great depth of flavor: I imagine that using dark brown sugar would be even more flavorful. I also liked the texture combination: soft and creamy on the inside, toasted and crunchy on top. Along with the crispy golden brown crust, this pie was delicious.
My only criticism is that this pie is a bit on the sweet side, but any pie with the word sugar in the name is bound to be sweet, lol.
As you can see, my southern brown sugar pie recipe was a success. It was easy, simple, and delicious. It is a traditional dessert that has fallen out of favor, so if you are looking for something different yet still old fashioned for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any day, definitely make this recipe.????????????????
Brown Sugar Pie Recipe:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1.5 cups light brown sugar (360g)
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 9-inch pie shell, unbaked
1. Melt butter and mix in all other ingredients except for the eggs
*By adding the sugar, etc. to the melted butter, this will bring down the temperature of the melted butter so that you do not accidentally cook the eggs.
2. After everything is combined, add the eggs.
3. Once all the ingredients are thoroughly combined, pour the mixture into an unbaked 9-inch pie shell.
4. Bake uncovered at 350 F for 45 minutes.
