How To make Bobalky
1 tb Butter
1 pk Yeast
2 tb Sugar
1/4 c Water, lukewarm
2 1/2 ts Salt
7 c Flour, all purpose, sifted
2 c Milk, scalded
Into a mixing bowl, place butter, sugar, and salt. Add scalded milk; let cool until lukewarm. Add yeast dissolved in water. Add enough flour to make a soft elastic dough. Turn onto a floured board and knead. Place in a greased bowl and let rise until double in bulk (1 to 1 1/2 hours) in a warm place, free from drafts. Punch dough down with fingertips and let rise again (about 45 minutes). Toss lightly on floured board, knead, and shape into a roll (like a pipe) about 1/2 inch in diameter. Place on cookie sheet. Cut with edge of teaspoon into small pieces and let rise for 10 minutes. Bake at 375-F for 15 minutes or until lightly brown. When cool, break and place in collander. Pour boiling water over bobalky. Place on serving dish, mix with poppy seed and melted butter, and serve. Poppy seed (1/2 cup) should be ground and cooked in 3/4 cup water for 10 minutes. Boil 3 cups milk and 1 cup sugar and mix with poppy seed.
Instead of using sugar in poppy seed mixture, honey may be used, poured over the bobalky. If your family is small, divide the above dough into two portions, bake bobalky from one portion, and a loaf of bread from the other. -----

Recipe makes for 3 rolls, poppy seed filling is enough for 2 rolls. You can fill the third one with whatever filling you want, such as ground walnuts. My ground walnuts filling didn't come out well so I am not including it in this video.
Recipe
Dough:
3 1/3 cups flour
1 packet dry yeast
1/4 cup powder sugar
2 egg yolks
1 stick + 3 tbsp melted cooled unsalted butter
3/4 cup warm milk
pinch of salt
Poppy seeds filling:
1 cup milk
1 cup powder sugar
2 cups poppy seeds (ground)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp oil
Bake at 355 F for 30 minutes

Makové bobaľky môžete tento rok pripraviť aj pre vegánov, aby ste si užili čaro Vianoc všetci. Veľmi sa k ním hodí makové, alebo iné rastlinné mlieko.
1. Do misky nasypeme múku, pridáme soľ a premiešame. Do stredu urobíme jamku, nadrobíme droždie, pridáme cukor a zalejeme teplým rastlinným mliekom. Zakryjeme a necháme 10 minút vzísť kvások.
2. Pridáme olej a vypracujeme hladké nelepivé cesto. Ak je príliš tuhé, prilejeme ešte mlieko.
3. Necháme vykysnúť asi hodinu, kým nezdvojnásobí svoj objem. Potom cesto rozdelíme na 4 časti, z každej vyformujeme valček a nakrájame na malé kúsky.
4. Z nich vyformujeme malé guličky, alebo ich len tak nakrájané poukladáme na olejom vymastený plech. Necháme medzi nimi rozostupy, aby sa nezlepili.
5. Zakryjeme utierkou a necháme ešte 10 minút podkysnúť.
6. Medzitým si rozohrejeme rúru na 200 °C. Pečieme približne 10-15 minút, do zlata.
7. Tesne pred servírovaním ich dáme do misky, prelejeme trochou teplého rastlinného mlieka a necháme ich zmäknúť, potom posypeme makom a cukrom a zľahka premiešame. Podávame teplé.

Ingredients:
- 8 pieces of bread rolls (ideally 2 days old)
- 150 g Ground Poppy Seed
- 50 g Powedered Sugar
- 10 dl Milk
- 2 packs of Vanillin Sugar
- 6 Egg Yolks
- 160 g Sugar
For the Vanilla Sauce:
- 2 Egg Yolks
- 3 spoons of Sugar
- 1 packs of Vanillin Sugar
- 5 dl Milk
- 1 Spoons of flour
We Hungarians love Poppy Seed, we use it on top of some baked goods or for the Poppy Seed Cakes we make for Christmas. One of our favorites is the Poppy Seed Bread Pudding we call Mákos Guba that can be enjoyed all year around and its quite easy to make. If you have some 2 day old bread rolls at home and want to get the best out of them, this dish is an excellent way to do that!
