1 lb dry white beans (Navy or Great Northern)
1 Onion, Sweet, chopped
1/2 cup cider vinegar
6-12 oz hard cider, pale ale, or other beer (
1/2 cup turbinado sugar (or brown if none)
12 oz tomato paste (or 1 qt roasted canned tomato sauce:
12+ oz water (if using tomato paste or as necessary)
3/4 cup molasses
2 tsp salt
1/2 cup dijon mustard
pepper sauce (Tabasco):
pieces of pulled pork or cooked brisket (with bark)
Pulled Pork:
Beef Brisket:
4 anaheim peppers, minced (or 1 poblanos or 1 jalapenos)
~1 cup fat separated pork shoulder or brisket drippings.
1/4-1/2 cup bourbon (optional)
Instructions:
1) Soak beans under a few inches of salted water (3 Tbsp/gallon ratio) for several hours until double/triple in size. Drain.
2) Simmer 1.5 hours in salted (.5-1 tsp) water or until soft. Drain.
Use Below Meat Method:
3) Add & mix beans with all other ingredients (less the meat & drippings) to an aluminum half tray pan or dutch oven.
Use the aluminum pan if possible. The acidity of the tomatoes can damage the seasoning on a dutch oven.
4) Add enough water to cover beans by a half inch.
5) Place directly under whatever meat you are smoking to begin collecting drippings from the meat.
6) Cook low and slow for several hours until beans are soft, smokey, and delicious. You may have to add more water during this time.
Or Use After Meat Method:
3) Add & mix beans with all other ingredients (including the meat & drippings) to an aluminum half tray pan or dutch oven.
Use the aluminum pan if possible. The acidity of the tomatoes can damage the seasoning on a dutch oven.
4) Cook low and slow for several hours until beans are soft, smokey, and delicious. You may have to add more water during this time.

Barbecue Baked Beans Smoked on the Pit | HowToBBQRight
Easy recipe for Barbecue Baked Beans Smoked right on the BBQ Pit
#barbecuebakedbeans #bbqbakedbeans #howtobbqright
My mom was always in charge of making the beans for our family barbecues, and this recipe reminds of the barbecue baked beans she made.
There isn’t anything fancy about this recipe, and I can’t recall her ever measuring the ingredients. My mom tasted as she went (I’m sure that’s why she’s such a good cook); and when the beans were just right, they were ready for the smoker.
The one thing that was always the same with her beans was the ShowBoat brand pork & beans. I will beat that just about every household in the south has a can of these somewhere in the pantry. She would drain several cans of pork & beans (leaving the hunks of fat) into a large pan or dutch oven and then start adding the ingredients that turns them into barbecue beans.
Brown Sugar and Sweet Onion always went in along with ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire. She would add whatever sauce was on sale or in the fridge and follow that with BBQ seasonings from the spice cabinet. We didn’t have any fancy rubs back then, so lots of time she would concoct her own.
Once the beans tasted up to her satisfaction they went on the smoker for about 3 hours. There wasn’t any specific time or temperature but the beans were always ready when it was time to serve the meat.
Barbecue Baked Beans Ingredients:
- 75oz Showboat Pork & Beans (5-15oz cans)
- 1 Vidalia Onion diced
- 1 cup Light Brown Sugar
- 1 cup BBQ Sauce (use your favorite brand or what’s on sale)
- 1/2 cup Ketchup
- 2 Tablespoons Mustard
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire
- 1/2 cup BBQ Rub (any bbq rub will work for beans)
Barbecue Baked Beans Directions:
1. Prepare charcoal smoker or other grill for indirect cooking at 250-275 degrees. Use your favorite wood for smoke flavor.
2. Drain the pork & beans and pour into an aluminum pan.
3. Add the diced onion, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, BBQ Sauce, Worcestershire Sauce, and BBQ Rub.
4. Gently fold to incorporate the ingredients and cook smoke uncovered for 2.5-3 hours or until onions are soft and liquid has thickened slightly.

Ingredients:
1 lb. Dry Pinto Beans
1/4 - 1/2 Yellow Onion (depending on size)
3 Tbls Chili Powder
1 - 1 1/2 Tbls Kosher Salt (1 Tbls or less if not Kosher)
1 Tbls Fresh Ground Black Pepper
1 Tbls Smoked Paprika
1 Tbls Onion Powder
1 Tbls Garlic Powder
1 Tsp Cumin
1/2 Tsp Chipotle Chili Powder
1/2 lb. Bacon
Directions:
1. Wash the beans checking for pebbles
2. Dice the onion
3. Combine the spices in a small bowl and mix
4. Add the beans, onion and spice mixture to a medium stock pot or dutch oven and fill with water until it covers the beans by 1 1/2 inches
5. Chop and cook the bacon and add it to the beans
6. Adjust the water level back to 1 1/2 inches over the beans.
7. Over Medium - medium high heat, bring the beans to a rolling simmer or boil, then turn the heat to low and cook covered for 1 hour.
8. Remove the lid and stir the beans and continue cooking for an additional hour; stirring every 15 mins or so.
9. Check the beans for tenderness and continue cooking for an additional 1-2 hours as needed to reach desired result; adding more water as needed.
**Notes**
These can also be done in a crockpot or slow cooker. Use the above directions but cook on low in a crockpot for 6 hours and then remove the lid and cook an additional 2 hours.
These are even better the next day and make great leftovers.
We typically make a double batch and freeze some in quart freezer bags; perfect size for 2 servings.
