There is a really great account on the History of Philadelphia Fish House Punch in David Wondrich's Imbibe, which of course is at this point required reading for those of you interested in the history of cocktails and drinking.
According to David Wondrich Philadelphia Fish Hoouse Punch should be required by law, taught in school and a mandatory part of every 4th of July. He even thinks young ones not yet of legal drinkign age should be given diluted proportions! This punch has a long history dating back to the very beginning of this country. This punch finds it's beginning in the Colony of Schuylkill which was founded by William Penn and a few of his followers in 1732. This was at a time when Americans were still English Expats. These people tried to make Schuylkill an independent Colony appointing a Governor, Secretary of State, assembly, code of laws, coroner and sherrif all their own and after the war for Independence they changed their name from Colony to State and tried to secede from the US altogether. I'm not going to write out the whole account here, that's better left to Wondrich who wrote about it much more eloquently than I will but I will say that during it's history the Colony of Schuylkill would have parties every other Wednesday from May through October where they'd make a whole batch of their famous Fish House Punch. The earliest recipe Wondrich could find comes from Jerry Thomas but in this episode we share one off specs for the drink so you guys can make them to order. Hope you guys love the punch! Happy 4th and be safe!

How to Make The Regent Punch
Skip to the Recipe here: abarabove.com/regent-punch
Regent Punch is about as aristocratic as a beverage can get. This punch has a royal lineage and was allegedly developed by King George IV when he was the Prince Regent from 1811 until his ascension to the throne in 1820.
A quick look at the ingredients and you will see, King George IV had quite the reputation for excess! Get the recipe here:
