1 c Butter or margarine
Softened 2 c Sugar
3 c All-purpose flour
4 Eggs
1 1/4 c Milk
2 ts Baking powder
2 ts Vanilla
1/2 ts Salt
Creamy chocolate frosting: 3 3/4 c Powdered sugar
3/4 c Butter or margarine
Softened 3 oz Unsweetened chocolate
Melted and cooled 1 1/2 ts Vanilla
3 tb Milk; about
Recipe by: Betty Crocker's Old-Fashioned Cookbook 1-2-3-4 Cake with Creamy Chocolate Frosting. Heat oven to
350 degrees.
Grease and flour 3 round pans, 8 or 9 X 1-1/2 inches. Beat all ingredients except Creamy Chocolate Frosting in large bowl on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pans. (If necessary, refrigerate remaining batter while two layers are baking.) Bake 8-inch pans 33 to 36 minutes, 9-inch pans 30 to 33 minutes or until no indentation is left when touched lightly. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans and cool completely. Prepare Creamy Chocolate Frosting. Fill layers with 1/3 cup frosting; frost side and top with remaining frosting. 12 SERVINGS. CHOCOLATE FROSTING: Beat all ingredients on low speed. Stir in additional milk, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until smooth and of spreading consistency. This recipe produces enough batter to fill three round cake pans, the perfect foundation for a proud and tall layer cake. Prior to the standardization of measurements, bakers either weighed ingredients or used a teacup to keep measurements uniform. One measure of butter, 2 of sugar, 3 of flour and 4 eggs was the easy way to remember the proportions of this heavy, fine-textured cake. Since that time, milk and leavening have been added to the batter. -----

1-2-3-4 CAKE
1 cup of butter
2 cups sugar
3 cups flour with 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of any flavor extract you like
Preheat oven to 350
Mix butter, add sugar and mix well, add eggs one at a time, mix in extract, add flour and milk, one at a time and end with flour.
3 baking pans and spray them, bake for 25-35 minutes or until done
Icing
3 cups powder sugar
1 stick of butter melted
2/3 cup of cocoa
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Melt butter and mix in cocoa, mix well together, add powder sugar a little at a time, and milk, mix well and add vanilla.

The main ingredients in our 1-2-3-4 pound cake recipe are:
+ 1 cup of unsalted butter (2 sticks)
+ 2 cups white granulated sugar
+ 3 cups Swans Down Cake Flour
+ 4 large eggs (room temperature)
+ 2 teaspoons baking powder
+ 1/2 teaspoon salt
+ 3/4 cup milk (whole or low fat)
+ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
+ 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
HOW TO MAKE POUND CAKE: Makes 2 loaves or 1 round (tube pan) cake.
0:00 PREHEAT oven to 325º. BUTTER and lightly flour two 9-inch loaf pans (or you can use one 10-inch tube pan). SIFT Swans Down Cake Flour, then lightly spoon into measuring cup for 3 cups.
0:10 CREAM butter and gradually add sugar, creaming until light and fluffy. SIFT the sifted cake flour with baking powder and salt. Add eggs one at a time to creamed mixture, blending after each addition.
0:20 ADD flour mixture alternately with milk and extracts, blending after each addition until smooth. (Do not over mix as this will yield a dry cake.)
0:30 POUR into prepared pan(s). BAKE at 325º for approx. 1 hour and 15-25 minutes. (If using loaf pans, test at 1 hour and 15 minutes and see if the cake tester comes out clean. For tube pan, you might need the full 25 minutes.)
0:40 COOL in pan(s) 15 minutes on wire rack. Remove from pan(s) and finish cooling on rack.
