Kiss-Me-Quick Victorian Perfume Recipe
This week, I’m sharing a Victorian-inspired perfume from an 1895 recipe book. This formulation creates a lovely, floral scent, with a hint of citrus. I’ve kept it as close as possible to the original blend, although I’ve swapped out some of the hard-to-find original ingredients with the modern equivalents.
Recipe Notes:
- Jasmine, neroli, and rose oil typically come pre-diluted. I've used the diluted versions in this recipe, so if you are using pure versions you may want to lessen the number of drops.
- While I usually use regular vodka for perfume recipes, this one really does need the higher-proof alcohol as it is being further diluted with the orange flower water. You can use either a special perfumers alcohol, or buy another high-proof, scentless alcohol of your choice. (If you really wanted to use vodka: omit the orange flower water and use the recommended substitution)
- If you prefer an oil-based perfume, simply swap out the alcohol and the floral water for a lightly scented oil of your choice (grapeseed oil or almond oil are the more common oil-bases for perfume).
- If you aren't happy with how the scent suits you (everyone's body chemistry is different!), remember you can always tinker with the drops of the oils. Either add more oils to alter the blend, or if the perfume is too-scented add some more of the alcohol.
- There are a lot of essential oils in this recipe but it uses very little of most of them so the cost per ounce isn't as high as it might first appear. However, this sort of recipe is really best for someone who already has a good-sized collection of essential oils. It would be very expensive to buy the oils only for this recipe, and while I like this perfume, I don't think it's fabulous enough to be worth the expense.
-Please Note: Citrus oils can cause photosensitivity. I've tried to keep the citrus oils relatively low, but please use caution if you are planning on wearing this perfume out in the sun. (Applying it to clothing or hair is a good alternative to applying directly to the skin. Or you could always be super Victorian and apply it to a handkerchief!).
