What's Cookin', Carroll County? Irish Soda Bread!
Mark Foley's family makes Irish soda bread every spring for St. Patrick's Day and Easter, and he wants to share the recipe with you! Join us to learn how to make this family favorite!
This Irish Bread recipe is the one passed down from my great-grandmother, who was originally from Ireland! Perfect for St. Patrick's Day and Easter, this is a springtime treat every year in the Foley household, so please enjoy!
Ingredients:
4 cups All-Purpose Flour
1-3/4 cups Buttermilk
1 stick (8 oz.) Butter
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Raisins
2 tsp. Baking Soda
1 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp. Caraway Seed (or more, depending on preference)
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients, adding the buttermilk last. Stir with a wooden spoon until fully combined, but make sure not to overwork the dough, you want it to look a little rough.
Transfer the dough to a greased cast-iron pan and spread to the edges. If you do not have a cast-iron pan, use a greased baking sheet, and form the dough into a low, flat dome.
Place in an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and allow to bake for 40-60 minutes. The bread is done when the crust is golden brown and the center of the bread is 185-200 degrees F.
Transfer from pan to a cooling rack, wait a few minutes and enjoy! Irish bread is best served warm and slathered with butter, in my experience.

You really ‘ate up’ our recent article about Soda bread and 4 other Irish Bread Varieties. Some of you requested recipes and your wish is our command. This time, why not join us for some Soda bread making in the Old Rectory at the Ulster Folk Museum at Cultra in Northern Ireland. Gillian shows us how quick and easy it actually is to make traditional Irish soda farls on a griddle in a home which is estimated to be 300 years old. The house originally stood about one mile east of Toomebridge before being dismantled and moved to the museum in 1971. One of its residents was a Captain Archibald McCallion who had fought as an officer in the British forces during the American War of Independence. Thanks so much Gillian for allowing us to join you!
