Herbs and Spices for Beginners | How to use Herbs and Spices | Vil and Zoe's Galley
Herbs and spices are widely used in the food industry as flavors and fragrances. They are a great way to add natural flavor to any dish without significantly increasing the calorie count and they offer great health benefits also.
But what are the differences between herbs and spices?
Herbs are the leaves, flowers, or stem parts of a plant, they can be fresh or dried. Spices are usually dried, they can be the seed, fruit bark, or root which are usually used for flavoring or coloring of foods.
Keep in mind that there are some plants are that are both herbs and spices. For example, coriander which is also known as Chinese parsley or cilantro - the leaves can be used as an herb and the seeds are dried and used as a spice. Another example is dill.
Here's a list of herbs that are commonly found in our homes:
Bayleaf
Basil
Coriander
Dill
Lemongrass
Marjoram
Oregano
Parsley
Rosemary
Sage
Thyme
Spices are usually dried and ground into a powder for convenience. A whole dried spice has the longest shelf life, so it can be purchased and stored in larger amounts, making it cheaper on a per-serving basis. Here's a list of spices that can be found in our homes:
Allspice
Star Anise
Cardamom
Cayenne peppers
Cinnamon
Cloves
Coriander
Cumin
Curry powder
Dill
Fennel
Ginger
Mace
Nutmegs
Paprika
Turmeric
These are just the common lists of herbs and spices at home, there are a lot more. Keep in mind that every herbs and spice have a different aroma, flavor, effect, even color on food once we add them. If in doubt, just add a little. You can always add more if you're not satisfied because it's hard to remove what you've already added.

How To Grow Herbs From Spices! Stop Buying Seeds!
Grow vegetables and herbs from spices purchased at balk stores. Do not buy expensive seeds. Save a lot of money.
I want to tell you such a thing that if you want and love to grow herbs in your garden for seasoning, then it is not necessary to buy seeds from specialized stores or garden centres. Greens and not only greens, / it is quite possible to grow from the spices themselves, you just need to purchase whole seeds of your favorite spices. And I went to a bulk food store where spices is sold by weight, and I bought seeds of several different types of spices. And it turns out all this is tens of times cheaper than in bags with seeds. For example, this $ 4.25 bag of coriander seeds I purchased weighing about 10 grams can be compared to this bag of 200 grams coriander seed spices for which I paid only $ 1.75. Almost forty times cheaper. You might even say that the seeds of herbs in a bulk store store may be of poor quality and will not grow or may have been processed in some way. On the contrary, they are usually not processed by anything, they can be old or expired to grow, but natural. So I decided to plant several different spice seeds for the experiment. I will plant a pinch of dill, coriander, fennel, caraway seeds and cumin, hot red chili peppers, anise seeds, mustard in different pots.#seeds #seedlingtrays #bulkfood #spices #spicesfood #dill #anise #chilipepper #mustard #cumin#caraway #fennelseed #fennel #hotpepper #corriander #growingvegetables #gardening #gardentips
