I still love that smell and get super excited making it. Nowadays, I can make it exactly the way I want. I keep all the nostalgic flavors, but update them. This party mix is a go-to for parties, gifts, or just an every-night treat!
INGREDIENTS
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 sprig thyme
- 1 sprig rosemary
- 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp seasoning salt
- 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 4 cups Corn Chex cereal
- 2 cups Oat Square cereal
- 2 cups Wheat Chex cereal
- 1 cup Parmesan fish crackers
- 1 cup sesame sticks
- 1 cup pretzels
- 2 cups mixed nuts
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 275°F.
To start, brown the butter. In an 8-inch skillet, melt the butter with the thyme and rosemary over medium heat. Once melted, continue to cook until the foaming slows down and the butter becomes a deep golden color and smells nutty, 6-8 minutes. Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes.
While the butter is cooling, in a large bowl, combine the Corn Chex, Oat Squares, Wheat Chex, Parmesan fish crackers, sesame sticks, pretzels, and mixed nuts. Stir to combine and set aside.
Once the butter has cooled, remove the thyme and rosemary, and set aside. Add the onion and garlic powder, seasoning salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk to combine.
Drizzle a few tablespoons of prepared butter mixture over the party mix and stir well. Continue to drizzle and stir in small amounts to ensure the cereal mixture is evenly coated.
Pour onto two parchment-lined baking sheets. Spread out to an even layer and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, stirring and switching racks every 15 minutes.
Once baked, remove from the oven. Cool 20 minutes and serve or store in an airtight container in a cool place for up to one month.

The texture will seem soft while warm and will harden during cooling. Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
Betty's 1952 Original Chex Party Mix
Betty demonstrates how to make the Original Chex Party Mix, a recipe that first appeared in the June 16, 1952 issue of Life magazine. Chex cereal was introduced in 1937 by the Ralston Purina Company, and the Original Chex Party Mix was used to promote it 15 years later. This has been a favorite snack over the years, even though the recipe has evolved through the decades. There have been at least 40 current versions available from General Mills, the maker of Chex cereal. I thought you might be interested in how it all began, by looking at the *first* recipe for Chex Party Mix!
1952 Original Chex Party Mix
1/3 cup butter
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups Wheat Chex
2 cups Rice Chex
½ cup nuts
¼ teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
Melt 1/3 cup butter in a shallow baking pan. Stir in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Add 2 cups Wheat Chex, 2 cups Rice Chex, and ½ cup nuts. (I used peanuts.) Sprinkle with ¼ teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt. Heat for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven, stirring every 10 minutes. (Note: After baking for the first 10 minutes, I lowered the heat to 250 degrees, and after the second 10 minutes, I removed the Party Mix from the oven. The Chex Mix would have been over-brown, if I had left it the full 30 minutes at 350 degrees. I suggest you bake this mix at only 250 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.) Cool. (Note: I stored my Chex Party Mix in an airtight container after it was cool.)
This is an interesting look back at a very simple combination of textures and flavors that became *very* popular! I think you will enjoy this simple mix!

Betty's Original Chex Party Mix
Betty demonstrates how to make the modern-day version of the Original Chex Party Mix. If you compare the recipe to the 1952 version of the Original Party Chex mix, you will see that it has changed quite a lot! This is the recipe that you will currently find on a box of Chex cereal from General Mills. Along with the Chex cereal, the recipe calls for mixed nuts, pretzel chips, bagel chips, and an expanded seasoning blend. This snack is always popular for parties, traveling, sports events, TV, movies, and just as a quick snack!
Original Chex Party Mix
3 cups Corn Chex cereal
3 cups Rice Chex cereal
3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
1 cup mixed nuts
1 cup bite-size pretzels
1 cup garlic-flavor bite-size bagel chips, or regular chips broken into 1-inch pieces
6 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 ½ teaspoons seasoned salt
¾ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
1. In a large microwaveable bowl, mix cereals, nuts, pretzels, and bagel chips; set aside. In a small microwaveable bowl, microwave butter, uncovered, on High, about 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in seasonings. Pour over cereal mixture; stir until evenly coated.
2. Microwave, uncovered, on High, 5 to 6 minutes, thoroughly stirring every 2 minutes. Spread on paper towels to cool. Store in airtight container.
Oven directions: Heat oven to 250 degrees F. In a large bowl, mix cereal, nuts, pretzels, and bagel chips; set aside. In an ungreased large roasting pan, melt butter in oven. Stir in seasonings. Gradually stir in cereal mixture until evenly coated. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on paper towels to cool, about 15 minutes. Store in airtight container.
You will notice that the Original Party Chex Mix of 2009 is quite a lot different from the first Original Party Chex Mix of 1952! It has been enhanced, and the baking instructions have been improved. It is also lower in fat! We will try a sweet version of Party Chex Mix soon! All of these are great munchies for watching TV, sports events, movies, or just vegging out on the couch!!! Enjoy! --Betty
