BEEF MADRAS CURRY - Spicy Beef Curry Recipe- Real Anglo-Indian Recipe - The Real Deal
Beef Madras Curry is an iconic British Indian Curry dish named after the city of Madras, which is now called Chennai. The city of Madras was founded by the British in 1640 as the first major British settlement in India. Beef Madras Curry and the Mulligatawny Soup originated in Madras and were some of the earliest Indo-British fusion dishes to be made. It was a very popular hot and spicy curry during the British Raj which made its way out of the clubs of the Madras Presidency into the rest of India and later into Britain itself. It is now a ubiquitous item of the British Curry House as well as sold as a ready meal in most British Supermarkets. Obviously, there are obvious variations of this recipe to suit different people's palates, but my recipe is as close to how it was originally prepared using essential South Indian ingredients.
I have listed the main ingredients below:
1 Large Red Onion
1 Tbsp. Ginger & Garlic
½ Cup Canned Tomatoes
200 ml. Coconut Milk
1 Tsp. Tamarind Paste
2 Tbsp. Desiccated Coconut
1 Tsp. Turmeric Powder
Whole Spices:
1 Tbsp. Coriander Seeds
1 Tsp. Cumin Seeds
1 Tsp. Black Mustard Seeds
½ Tsp. Fenugreek Seeds
4 Cloves
3 Green Cardamoms
1 Stick Cinamon
2 Dry Red Chillies
1 Tsp. Black Peppercorns
A Handful of Curry Leaves
