How To Make Ranch Style JOHN WAYNE CASSEROLE
John Wayne Casserole. One of the few casseroles that gives tater tot casserole a run for its money. Loaded with beef, veggies, and cheese, this simple hotdish is topped with flavorful biscuits smothered in butter.
It's unclear exactly where John Wayne Casserole originated, but it has apparently been around for decades as the Duke himself considered it a personal favorite. According to 12 Tomatoes, John Wayne was asked to contribute a recipe for the cookbook, Cooking with Love from Cara and Her Friends. Proceeds from the book were to benefit the American Cancer Society. The book was a compilation of recipes from celebrities and John Wayne submitted his favorite casserole. This recipe was released in the book in 1979, the same year that Wayne died from cancer.
Numerous varieties of this casserole can be found online, but there is one thing that nearly all of them have in common. They feature a biscuit layer and lots of beef. We've taken the classic recipe and put our own Rebel twist on it by turning it upside down (putting the biscuits on top instead of the bottom) and added a ranch dressing kick.
We think you and your family will love gathering around the table to feast on this hearty hotdish. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

John Wayne Casserole- Mini Individual Casseroles
For these adorable and tasty mini individual casseroles, we use 12oz ramekins. We find they are the perfect size for dinner. Enjoy!! This recipe makes four servings.
Ingredients:
1 package of refrigerated pie crusts (we prefer Pillsbury)
1 lb ground beef
1/2 packet taco seasoning with water per directions
3-4 Roma tomatoes, sliced
1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
1/4 white onion, diced
1/4 cup mayo (we use Duke's mayo...of course)
1/4 cup sour cream
2 oz jalapenos, sliced
1 1/2 cups of Colby cheese, shredded
1-2 teaspoons olive oil
Directions:
1. Spread pie crust out on cutting board. Turn two ramekins over onto pie crust and cut along the edge of the ramekins with a sharp knife. Repeat with the other two ramekins on the second pie crust. Set aside.
2. Brown ground beef in skillet. Add taco seasoning and water. Cook until done. Set aside.
3. In a small skillet, heat olive oil and saute bell peppers and onion for several minutes. Set aside.
4. Mix half of the cheese, mayo, and sour cream in a small bowl. Set aside.
5. To assemble layer the ingredients in the following order in the ramekins:
Ground beef mixture
Sliced tomatoes
Sauteed onion and bell peppers
Sour cream mixture
Jalapenos
Remaining cheese
Pie crust
6. Press pie crust lightly on top of each mini casserole. Add small slits on the top of each for ventilation.
7. Place ramekins on a cookie sheet and bake in a 425-degree oven for 15-25 minutes or until top and golden brown.

Slow Cooker John Wayne Casserole (with tater tots)
SLOW COOKER JOHN WAYNE CASSEROLE (WITH TATER TOTS)
One of the most popular recipes on my website that I updated the video and photos. This casserole has a southwestern theme and plenty of cheese.
RECIPE:
INGREDIENTS:
32 oz. bag tater tots (frozen, not thawed)
1 lb. ground beef
1 small yellow onion diced
1 green bell pepper diced
1 oz. taco seasoning mix (I use Lawry's)
water add the amount of water to the meat that the taco mix says to add, 2/3 cup is what my packet said
16 oz. sour cream
8 oz. sharp cheddar cheese (divided, half in sour cream mixture and half on top at the end)
⅛ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. pepper
½ tsp. onion powder
optional toppings
diced tomatoes
bell peppers
SLOW COOKER SIZE:
6-quart oval
INSTRUCTIONS:
Spray a 6-quart oval slow cooker with non-stick spray. Add the tater tots down in a single layer. Set aside.
In a large skillet, set over medium high heat, brown the hamburger, onions and bell pepper. When the meat is browned, drain the fat. Add the amount of water the taco packet says to add to the meat (my packet said to add ¾ cup). Add the taco packet, and continue cooking and stirring until the meat and the seasoning has thickened.
Pour the meat mixture over the tater tots in the slow cooker.
In a medium sized bowl add the sour cream, salt, pepper, onion powder, and half of the cheese (this is about a heaping cup of shredded cheese, save the other half to top the casserole at the end.)
Spread this sour cream cheese mixture over the meat mixture in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on LOW for 4.5 hours, without opening the lid during the cooking time.
After the cooking time is up add the remaining cheese evenly over the casserole.
Cover and let the cheese melt, this will only take about 5-10 minutes.
To serve, top with diced tomatoes.
Enjoy!
