How to Make The Best Braided Bread: Challah
Braiding a challah whether it's three strand, four strand, or even six strand is truly the only part in the entire recipe that's slightly challenging. The rest of it is surprisingly easy. All the more reason to bake your own to have on hand for the best french toasts of all time, epic grilled cheeses, or whatever you like to use challah for. It's good for most things but it toasts up especially nice. Hope you love it!

Recipe from Taste of Home Bakeshop Cookbook:
Silicone pastry brush:
Bristle pastry brush:
Baking sheet:
What You'll Need (for 1 loaf):
- 1 packet of active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/2 cup warm water (110 - 115 degrees F)
- 1/4 cup canola oil (I used light olive oil)
- 2 T + 2 tsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 3 to 3 1/4 cups all purpose flour
Egg Wash:
- 1 T cold water
- 1 egg
What You'll Do:
1. in a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water (I would wait maybe 5 or so minutes, or until the yeast gets frothy)
2. add the oil, sugar, salt, and eggs; give it all a stir and make the your egg yolks get broken up
3. add 2 cups of flour; stir until smooth; add more flour until you acheive a firm dough ball
4. turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth (6-8 minutes)
5. place dough into a greased bowl; cover and let rise until doubles (about 1 hour)
6. punch down the dough; turn in onto a floured surface; split into 3 equal sections; roll each section into a 15 inch dough rope
7. place all 3 dough ropes onto a large greased or lined baking sheet and braid; pinch the ends of your braided loaf and tuck them under
8. cover and let rise until doubled (about another hour)
9. preheat your oven to 350 degrees F; prepare your egg wash by beating the egg together with the water; use a pastry brush to wipe your egg wash all over your bread loaf
10. bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown; cool on a wire rack

Best Challah Bread Recipe Made Easy
Challah is a Jewish sweet egg bread that is traditionally shaped into a braid or swirl. It is one of my most popular breads that I sell at the Farmer's Market and I am sharing my recipe with you! This recipe makes 2 loaves. Use a bread machine to do the hard work of kneading and you can finish it off by shaping the loaves by hand.
Required equipment:
Bread machine (optional), bread scraper or knife, spray bottle with pure water (optional), plastic wrap, parchment paper, pan, pizza stone (optional), scale (optional), bowl for rising, small bowl for egg wash, fork or whisk, pastry brush.
Ingredients:
4 c. all purpose flour
1/3 c. sugar
1.5 tsp. salt
1 T. yeast
2T. oil (coconut or mild oil)
3 eggs (2 for bread, 1 for egg wash)
1 c. warm water
sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping
Add dry ingredients to mixing pan in bread machine after ensuring the paddle is placed. Add wet ingredients and select 'dough' setting on machine. Once kneading is complete, remove dough to greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Allow to rise 30 minutes or until doubled. Divide dough into two pieces for two loaves. Further divide each portion into three pieces if making a braid or leave in one piece for swirl. Refer to video for shaping demonstration. Brush gently with egg wash and sprinkle with desired seed topping, cover with plastic wrap. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and allow bread to rise for another 30 minutes. Bake for 20-30 minutes, until a deep golden brown, but not burnt on the bottom. (Bread should read 165 degrees on internal temperature thermometer.)
