Black Bottom Cupcakes Recipe | Cream Cheese Self Filled Cupcakes | Cooking Up Love
Our Black Bottom Cupcakes Recipe is the best of both worlds - moist chocolate cake with a creamy vanilla cheesecake filling. This recipe starts with a chocolate cake mix and we boost the chocolate flavor with some cocoa powder. Then whip up the cheesecake filling with cream cheese and just a handful of simple ingredients you've probably got in the pantry. In less than 40 minutes, these scrumptious tasty treats are ready!
These Black Bottom Cupcakes are a perfect dessert or delicious as a breakfast muffin, and they really don't even need frosting with the rich cheesecake filling. We used half of the batter to make a Black Bottom Loaf Cake to share at a family brunch... so soft and moist with the luscious cream cheese filling loaded with chocolate chips, no wonder it went so fast!

Black Bottom Cupcakes Recipe Ingredients
1 box Devils Food cake mix
4 eggs
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 cup water
⅓ cup avocado or olive oil
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup sugar
1/8 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
Black Bottom Cupcakes Recipe Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, 3 eggs, 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 1 cup of water and ⅓ cup of avocado or olive oil.
Blend on low speed until everything is incorporated and moistened, and then beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
Set the cake batter aside to make the cheesecake filling next. Combine 1 8oz package of softened cream cheese, with ⅛ tsp salt, ⅓ cup of sugar,and an egg. Blend on medium speed for about 2 minutes until it’s smooth and creamy. Add 1 tsp of vanilla paste or extract and blend. Then fold in 1 cup of chocolate chips.
Line a cupcake pan with baking liners, and fill the bottom with the chocolate cake mix. Add a generous tablespoon of the cheesecake filling on top, and bake for about 18 - 21 minutes.
As the cupcakes cook, the cream cheese filling sinks down into the cupcake! These are delicious just like this, or frost them if you like! We used the rest of the batter to make a mini chocolate self-filled loaf cake, and it turned out beautifully tender with the cheesecake filling surprise along the bottom. Butter and flour a mini loaf pan tin, fill with about 1 1/2 cups cake batter, then spoon on about 4 tablespoons of the cheescake filling. Bake for about 20 - 27 minutes, or until the cake pulls away from the sides of the pan and the cake tests done using a toothpick or bamboo skewer.

BLACK BOTTOM CUPCAKES with Cream Cheese Filling
Black Bottomed Cupcakes
Preheat your oven to 340 degrees F.
Make the cream cheese filling by combining and then beating the following ingredients:
8 oz cream cheese
1/3 cup white sugar
1 large egg
¼ tsp vanilla
1 cup of chocolate chips
Refrigerate while you make the cake part of the cupcake
Mix the following dry ingredients together in a bowl:
1 ½ cups of flour
1 cup white sugar
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
Mix the wet ingredients together in another bowl:
1 cup of milk
½ cup oil
1 TBSP vinegar
1 tsp vanilla
Mix the wet ingredients into the dry and mix well. Line muffin tins with paper liners and fill the liners half full of the cake batter and then add one tablespoon of cream cheese filling to the center of each cupcake. Don’t press it down or try to arrange it jus a dollop in the middle.
Cook in a 350 degree oven for 18 to 22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out without any uncooked batter on it. Cool completely in the muffin tins before removing them. These freeze really well.

Ingredients: Serving 20 cupcakes:
Cream cheese filling
8 oz = 227 gr cream cheese (softened)
1/3 cup = 87 gr sugar
1/8 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp = 3 gr vanilla extract
1 egg at room temperature
1 cup = 180 gr mini semisweet chocolate chips
Cake batter:
1 1/2 cup = 210 gr All purpose flour
1 cup = 220 gr sugar
1/4 cup = 27 gr unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp =4 gr baking soda (DO NOT USE BAKING POWDER for this recipe)
1/2 tsp = 3 gr kosher salt
3/4 cup = 170 gr water at room temperature
2 tsp = 10 gr white vinegar
1 tsp = 3 gr vanilla extract
1/3 cup = 70 gr veg. oil
Convection Bake at 350°F preheated oven for 16 mins. (positioned rack in the middle of oven)
*After 16 mins of baking, turn off oven and leave oven door slightly open and keep cupcakes in oven for 5 more minutes.

How to Make Black Bottom Cupcakes
This is an old-fashioned recipe for classic Black Bottom Cupcakes!

This is my grandmother's recipe that I've been making and enjoying since I was a kid! It has a fudgy chocolate base and a rich cheesecake center loaded with mini chocolate chips! A chocolate-lover's dream!

Ingredients
Cream Cheese Filling:
8 oz cream cheese softened
1/3 cup granulated sugar 66g
1 large egg
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup mini chocolate chips 170g
Bottoms:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 190g
1 cup granulated sugar 200g
1/3 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder 31g
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/3 cup canola or vegetable oil 80ml
1 Tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
00:00 Introduction
00:24 Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and line two 12-count muffin tins with paper liners. Set aside.
00:28 Prepare cream cheese filling first by stirring together cream cheese and sugar until well-combined and not lumpy. Stir in egg, salt, and vanilla extract until completely combined.
01:11 Stir in chocolate chips. Set aside.
To prepare chocolate batter:
01:25 In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
01:50 Add milk, oil, vinegar, and vanilla extract and stir until batter is smooth and well combined.
02:18 Evenly divide chocolate batter into prepared muffin tins, filling each liner only ⅓ full with batter.
03:09 Dollop 1 ½ Tablespoons of cheesecake batter onto the top of the chocolate batter in the center.
03:29 Transfer to 350F (175C) oven and bake for 16-18 minutes.
03:36 Allow to cool and then enjoy.
Notes
This recipe can be made into mini black bottom cupcakes. Fill liners of mini cupcake tin less than ½ full of chocolate batter then dollop 1-1 ½ teaspoons of cream cheese filling on top.Bake about 14-16 minutes. Will make 48 mini black bottoms.
Storing
I prefer these black bottoms when they are stored in the refrigerator (something about liking my cheesecake cold!). Make sure you store them in an airtight container so they don’t dry out!
