Here's What People Ate To Survive During WWII
Americans who stayed home during WWII were asked to make sacrifices to support troops overseas. People changed jobs, took on new responsibilities at home, and even changed their diets. Food rationing was a must. The military got the best meat, coffee, and nonperishables, while everyone else tightened their belts and made do. Instead of grumbling about it, people got creative.

The WORST cookie recipe EVER - 1943 Canadian Wartime Recipe
Generally, I love any type of oatmeal cookie... with raisins, chocolate chips, cranberries, etc... HOWEVER.... I have finally met a cookie that I don't like. I even checked to make sure my shortening wasn't rancid!! (It was brand new)
Don't get me wrong, the texture wasn't bad.. the corn syrup did make it fairly chewy. But holy moly the flavor was somethin' else - and not in a good way. I am not sure if taking the time to alter this recipe would be worth it... honestly I think I'll just stick with my tried and true version that includes butter and vanilla and all the rest of the good stuff.
Now I know that wartime versions of things were made to be economical and that ingredients were hard to come by sometimes, but I think I would have rather just had the filling on a spoon rather than waste it on a poor excuse for a cookie sandwich.
Oh well.. you live, you learn!
If you are curious and want to, for some reason, try it... here's the link to the recipe.

WWII Reenactment Cooking - Gulasch Part 2.
A little teaser from our latest barracks event!
This was filmed on a sunday, and the reenactment event was over - and we were packing up. Before we left we used a couple of hours to maintain your gear and have some late lunsj at around 1400 hours. The lunch was the leftover goulash cooked on friday.
We made Gulasch based on a historically correct recipe (Video: WWII Reenactment Cooking - Gulasch). Here you can see The man assigned to Küchendienst, serving the men of Stube III with lunch. The food is first tasted and approved by the U.v.D before the rest of the men are allowed to eat. At the end of our event, we had a ''Putz- und Flickstunde'' where the equipment of our members was maintained and inspected by the NCO`s before they were allowed to leave.

The main focus of this channel is primarily military history, mainly within the second world war (WW2) timeframe. The channel features various content, such as videos on metal detecting, magnet fishing, exploring and visiting historical sites, collecting militaria, reenactment, restoration etc. I'm a WW2 reenactor/living history enthusiast and many of my videos feature tutorials, kit reviews, reenactment footage and information about the hobby.
