Cream butter and shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add egg and vanilla, beating well. Combine flour and salt; stir into creamed mixture. Chill dough at least 1 hour. Divide dough in half; store 1 portion in refrigerator. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut with
a 2-inch cookie cutter, and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Using a small paintbrush, paint assorted designs on cookies with Egg Yolk Paint. Bake at 375 degrees for 9 to 10 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack. Repeat procedure with remaining EGG YOLK PAINT Combine egg yolk and water; stir well. Divide mixture into several custard cups; tint as desired with food coloring. Keep paint covered until ready to use. If paint thickens, add a few drops of water, and stir 1-1/2 tablespoons.
NOTE: Forego the usual sugar sprinkles to decorate the tops of rolled sugar cookies, and try painting them with Egg Yolk Paint. This cookie recipe works particularly well for the technique since it has no leavening added, and the cookies don't rise as much as some. Rising could alter the look of the design you paint before baking. -----

Painted 'Porcelain' Sugar Cookies
These 'porcelain' or 'painted' sugar cookies are almost too pretty to eat! Make them for a party or shower, or prepare them as fancy gifts for your friends.
To make, ice any cut-out cookies (sugar cookies, gingerbread) with a batch of stiff royal icing (icing sugar + egg whites). Leave the iced cookies to dry for at least 24 hours. To prepare the 'paint', mix one part gel food colouring with one part vodka. Stir well and let the mixture sit for at least 15 minutes. Using a food-only paint brush, paint on designs. Let cookies dry for about five minutes. Eat and enjoy!
These cookies are easy to make and super fun to paint!

How to paint gold on cookies!
Hi again, hope you enjoy this video showing you how to use different techniques to paint gold on cookies. Whenever my cookies need that something extra to make them perfect, I add a little gold.
For the best results you want to make sure you are using alcohol with the highest percentage you can find. I am using Everclear which is 90% alcohol. You want it to be on the thicker side when you mix it so it gives you nice coverage. The alcohol evaporates quickly so you don´t need to worry about children eating the cookies. You can also use lemon extract, just note it will give you a lemony taste on your cookies.
Happy painting!
