The Great Library Pie Bake-Off: Roundtable Discussion
Circle up, everyone! We're celebrating Pi Day with a cross-country historical pie bake-off. During the Great Library Pie Bake-Off, on Friday, March 12, catalogers, curators, and librarians from libraries across the country dug into the collections of the Folger, UCLA's William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, or their own institutions to find and bake a potato pie recipe from the past. Watch their roundtable discussion (pun intended) about whose pie is best and what cooking can teach us about history.
Take a closer look at the potato pie recipe the Folger's bakers tackled on pages 16 and 17 of a 17th-century manuscript cookbook by L. Cromwell:

People quit acting for many reasons. Perhaps they're done with their time in the spotlight and they want to live a more private life. Perhaps they are no longer passionate about acting, and they want to move on to something else in their career. In the worse cases, actors stop acting because they passed away or died. In this video, we'll take a look at many of the actors who have stopped acting over the years. These include actors who stopped acting because they died, as well as many actors who quit even though they are alive and well. Enjoy!

Ellen’s Homemade Pie Crust recipe:
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 1/4 cups buttermilk, room temperature
4 extra large or jumbo eggs, plus 1 egg yolk, room temperature
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1 tablespoon lemon zest
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon pure lemon extract
1/4 cup all purpose flour, sifted
1 (9 inch) deep dish pie shell, thawed (or refrigerated pie crust)
Whipped cream, for serving (optional)
Lemon wedge, for garnish (optional)
Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees
In a large bowl, add the sugar, buttermilk, eggs, egg yolk, melted butter, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt, vanilla extract and lemon extract and whisk together until well blended. Then add and sprinkle in the flour and whisk until well incorporated. Place the pie shell on a baking sheet, then pour the filling over the crust. Bake until the top is golden brown and set around the edges with a slight jiggle in the center, about 1 hour (If the crust begins to get too brown, but the filling isn’t ready, cover the edges loosely with foil. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely at room temperature. Cut into desired slices, serve with whipped cream and garnish with lemon wedge (if desired) and enjoy!
