Almond Puff Pastry - Quick & Easy Version.
I've done the calculation. Making your own pastry needs 3 blocks of 250g butter that cost around S$15 and at least 4 hours, while the Borg's puff pastry in a pack of 7 cost around $8.

OLD TIMEY ALMOND PUFF
This is a request from Noods and I was glad to share it.
Easy, requires a few steps, needs very few ingredients
I've had the recipe since 70's
Heat oven to 350 degrees and bake one hour
ALMOND PUFF
Base:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons water
Cut the butter and flour together using a pastry cutter, two knives or your hands. The butter will be like little pebbles when done
Sprinkle water over mixture; mix with a fork.
Round into a ball and divide in half
On a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (no greasing!), pat each half into a strip 12x3 inches, .
Strips should be about 3 inches apart
Filling:
1/2 cup butter, softened
'1 cup water
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup flour
3 eggs
In medium saucepan, heat butter and water to rolling boil.
Remove from heat and quickly stir in almond extract and flour.
Stir vigorously over low heat until mixture forms a ball, about 1 minute.
Remove from heat and beat in eggs all at same time and stir until smooth.
Divide in half and spread each half evenly over strips covering completely.
Bake 350 degrees for about 60 minutes (mine was done in 55 minutes)
Topping should be crisp and brown
Cool
Powdered sugar glaze/frosting
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract or vanilla extract
1-2 tablespoons warm water (approximately)
The thickness all depends on you. A glaze uses more moisture and a frosting uses less.
I went in-between and used about 3 tablespoons
Don't forget, if it is too thin, just add more liquid
Vice versa if it is too thick
Enjoy!
