Easy quick bourbon chicken recipe from scratch. Bourbon chicken is a flavorful chicken dish named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana and for the bourbon whiskey ingredient. The dish is commonly found at Cajun, Chinese, and American BBQ themed restaurants.
The recipe includes soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and bourbon in the base, and the chicken is marinated in this sauce. Almost all Chinese take out menus and those at the mall food courts feature some version of this chicken in a dark sweet/sour sauce served over mounds of steaming white rice. I found this recipe while looking for something to whip up quickly for dinner one night and was intrigued by the more than 2000 reviews it had received over at recipezaar. It may not be athentic, but so many people thought it was great- fast to whip up and delicious, and I do too!

Ingredients
2 lbs boneless chicken breasts or tenderloin, cut into bite-size pieces
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 garlic pod , crushed ( I used garlic paste)
1/4 teaspoon ginger ( I used ginger paste)
3/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 cup apple juice ( I used store bought prune juice, others have used orange)
1/3 cup light brown sugar ( I used regular sugar)
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 tbsp to 1/4 cup Bourbon whiskey ( Optional)

1 tablespoon fresh minced ginger
1 tablespoon sesame oil or use vegetable oil
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup bourbon use apple juice as a non-alcoholic substitute
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional for a touch of heat, or to taste
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon water
For Garnish: Chopped scallions/green onions, spicy chili flakes

- 1.5 Lbs Red Potatoes (Cut in Halves or Quarters)
- 2 Tsp Minced Garlic
- 3 Cups Low Sodium Chicken Broth
- 2 Cups Water
- Salt (For Water)
- 1 Cup (+ 1/4 to 1/2 more) of Heavy Whipping Cream
- 1 to 2 Tsp Salt or Cajun Seasoning
- Black Pepper to Taste
- 1 Tbsp Butter
- Feel free to add additional Garlic Powder (1 Tbsp)
CHICKEN:
- 2 Boneless/ Skinless Chicken Breast
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Cajun Seasoning
- 1 Tsp Dried Thyme
- 1 Tsp Black Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1/4 Cup Bourbon (Optional)
- 1 Tsp Chili Powder (Optional; mentioned in the video but not required)
SHRIMP:
- 1/2 Lb Jumbo Shrimp
- 1 to 2 Tbsp Bourbon (Optional)
- 1 Tsp Old Bay
- 1 Tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Dried Thyme
- 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
- 1 Tsp Chili Powder (Optional; mentioned in the video but not required)
ONIONS & MUSHROOMS:
- 1 Whole Onion, Chopped
- 1 Cup White Mushrooms, Chopped
- 1/4 Cup Bourbon
- Salt
- Pepper
CAJUN BUTTER: (OPTIONAL)
- 1 Stick of Unsalted Butter
- 1/4 Tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 1/2 Tsp Cajun Seasoning
- 1/2 Tsp Dried Oregano and Thyme
- 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder
