Make-Ahead Stuffed French Toast
Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to make french toast, the stuffed way! Decadently cream-filled, you make this french toast recipe the night before and slip it onto the griddle the next morning to create a tasty breakfast with ease. The surprise filling is going to make this easy french toast recipe a show-stopping breakfast. Place half of an 8-ounce package of softened cream cheese into a medium bowl and add to it 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Beat the filling until everything is smooth. You can use either Challah, Italian, or French bread for this homemade french toast, but just make sure you have enough bread for six 1 1/2-inch slices of french toast. Cut a pocket into the top of each bread slice and fill with the cream cheese mixture you've just prepared. Arrange the slices of this stuffed french toast recipe in a rectangular baking dish and set aside for now while you whip up the yummy custard the bread's going to soak in overnight. Crack four eggs into a medium bowl and add to it 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of honey or sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk this until it's well-blended and pour over the tops of the bread to create the perfect french toast. Cover and chill for two to 24 hours, turning the bread slices once or twice during that time so they soak up the optimal amount of custard. When you're ready to start serving the stuffed french toast, lightly grease a griddle over medium heat and cook the bread slices until they're golden brown on each side. To give these breakfast french toast recipes an even airier look and taste, lightly dust the slices with confectioner's sugar and maple syrup. You'll feel like you're vacationing in France when you dig into this recipe, especially since you did any of the prep work the night before!

French Toast Bread Pudding
Recipe courtesy of Ina Garten
Total: 1 hr 55 min
Prep: 15 min
Inactive: 10 min
Cook: 1 hr 30 min
Yield: 8 servings
Level: Easy
Ingredients
1 challah loaf, sliced 3/4-inch thick
8 extra-large eggs
5 cups half-and-half or milk
3 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Confectioners' sugar and pure maple syrup, for serving
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Arrange the bread in two layers in a 9 by 13 by 2-inch baking dish, cutting the bread to fit the dish. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, honey, orange zest, vanilla, and salt. Pour the mixture over the bread and press the bread down. Allow to soak for 10 minutes.
Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan and add enough very hot tap water to the roasting pan to come an inch up the side of the baking dish. Cover the roasting pan tightly with aluminum foil, tenting it so the foil doesn't touch the pudding. Make two slashes in the foil to allow steam to escape. Bake for 45 minutes, remove the aluminum foil, and bake for another 40 to 45 minutes, until the pudding puffs up and the custard is set. Remove from the oven and cool slightly.
With a small sieve, dust lightly with confectioners' sugar and serve hot in squares with maple syrup on the side.
