Amazing and Crunchy Soft Shell Crab Sandwich | Best Seafood Sammy | Best Way to Use Old Bay on Crab
Want to shake things up a bit, and get rid of any crabby attitudes? Nothin’ compares to a good ol’ fried soft shell crab sandwich. The crunch, ocean vibes and Old Bay tartar sauce work together for the perfect lunch bite. One of our favorite dishes that's popular all across Maryland, there’s something special about soft shell crabs. You can act beastly with this sammy as you eat the whole crab - shell and all!
Soft shell crabs are named the way they are because they are blue crabs that have just molted their shells. Their new shells are as tough, and fry up incredibly well to a golden brown deliciousness that just can’t be beat. This dish is easy to make and on a budget so you don’t have to break the bank to make some delicious seafood this season. We based our recipe off a similar one you can find below.

???? Ingredients ????
- Pre-made tartar sauce (ingredients listed in our other video
- 3 Eggs
- 1 Loaf of thick, sturdy white bread, slice and toast 8 slices
- 1 Head of Bibb lettuce
- 4 Hothouse tomatoes, sliced
- 4 soft shell crabs, cleaned, soft shell still intact
- ¼ Cup All Purpose flour
- 1 tsp. Old Bay Seasoning
- ¼ Cup Yellow Cornmeal
- ¼ tsp. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 3-4 Tbsp. canola oil
- 1 Tbsp Unsalted butter
--
???? Directions ????
- Combine all ingredients for the tartar sauce and put in the refrigerator (
- Slice the tomatoes and bread
- Toast 8 slices of of bread, set-aside
- The night before (or at least an hour before), combine the buttermilk, 1 Tbsp of cajun seasoning, pickle juice and garlic powder, whisk. Place the chicken things in the marinade and let it sit overnight
- In a shallow bowl or pan, whisk the three eggs together
- In another shallow bowl or pan, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper and Old Bay and whisk together
- Heat the oil in a cast iron skillet until it gets shimmery and hot (when you put a pinch of flour in there, and it bubbles, you’ll know it’s hot enough)
- Add in the butter to the oil and stir
- Take each crab, coat in the eggs
- Take the crab out of the eggs and dip into the flour/cornmeal mix
- Drop the crab into the oil and fry each one, 3 minutes each side
- Remove from oil, drain on paper towels, and salt each crab
- Assemble the sandwich, a healthy layer of the Old Bay tartar sauce on the top slice, and the bottom, layer a few leaves of Bibb lettuce, two tomato slices and the sandwich
- Crunch your way to the perfect lunch!
❗️Bonus Tip - The crabs also work really well on their own without being in a sandwich, and you can replace the tartar sauce with a remoulade if you like. We have also chopped the crabs in half, fried them and served them as finger-food appetizers with the tartar as a dipping sauce.
