In this cake decorating tutorial, I demonstrate how to create a pretty spider cake, perfect for Halloween! This design makes use of the Russian Piping Tips, which can be found online or at your local cake decorating supplies store.

SPIDER WEB HALLOWEEN CAKE RECIPE
Ingredients
3 Cups | 375g Flour
⅔ Cups | 85g Cocoa Powder
1 tsp Baking Soda
½ tsp Salt
2 Sticks | 1 Cup | 225g Butter
2 Cups | 400g White Granulated Sugar
4 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 Cup | 250ml Buttermilk
1 Cup | 250ml Hot Coffee
2 Cups Buttercream
1 tsp Black Gel Colouring
⅓ Cup | 40g Cocoa Powder
1 Cup White Marshmallows
Instructions
In a medium sized mixing bowl sieve together the dry ingredients.
In a larger mixing bowl mix together the butter and sugar until combined. Add the vanilla and mix again. Crack in all 4 eggs and mix until combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl.
Pour the dry ingredients and the buttermilk and coffee into the larger mixing bowl with the butter mixture and use a wooden spoon to fold the ingredients together until well combined.
Divide the batter between two 6 inch or one 8 inch lined and greased cake tin and bake in a 160C | 320F oven for 40-50 mins or until the cake springs back when pressed.
To decorate the cake add the black colouring and cocoa powder to the buttercream and mix until combined. Level and cut each cake in half so you have 4 layers and place ⅓ Cup of buttercream between each layer. Use the remaining buttercream to cover the outside of the cake. Place into the fridge for 2 hours to set.
Place the marshmallows into the microwave for 30 second intervals until completely melted. Use clean and dry hands to stretch the marshmallow between your hands and drape over the cake. Continue until you are happy with the amount of marshmallow. Press the fake spiders around the cake.
Let the marshmallow set for an hour before serving.

Chocolate Spider Cake for Halloween!

Materials:
*This is a double barrel cake frosted with our Classic Vanilla Buttercream Recipe. The crusted frosting was smoothed with the Viva Paper Towel Method of smoothing. Of course, this design could be easily adapted for cakes of any size, and sheet cakes as well!
Coloring Gels: We used Americolor Super Black, Orange, and Electric Green
Wilton Black Candy Melts
M&Ms (We also had Junior Mints on hand for larger spider bodies but wound up only using the small spiders!)
Piping Tips: We used small round tips 3 & 4. Tip 3 for the web, tip 4 for border. (You can use these interchangeably, work with whatever small round tips you have.) We used a 104 petal tip for the green ruffle.
Wilton Black Pearlized Sprinkles for the spider eyes. (You can also just pipe on the eyes.)

Two cardboard cake circles. With a 4 layer double barrel cake design, I use one board for the cake to sit on as usual, and then another board halfway up with 4 bubble tea straws beneath to support the upper layers.
Notes:
*In the video, I made more spiders than I actually used! If you wish, you can carry the spiders all the way around the cake or even put one or two on top. These make great cupcake toppers also (but don’t stick the spider legs directly into frosting or the legs will soften). Lay them against the frosting instead.
If you keep it simple like I did with just a few spiders, I still recommend making a few extra just in case of breakage. Always handle the spiders when the are chilled. It only takes a few minutes in the freezer or 10-15 in the refrigerator to firm things up! Have fun!
Amazing Chocolate Spider Web Halloween Cake
My Spider web cake is the richest chocolate cake ever topped with a fudge buttercream and of course there's a chocolate spider sitting on a white chocolate web! This spooky cake is always really fun to make and so easy to decorate too!
This should be called my billion dollar sheet cake because it’s SO RICH! Chocolate fudge buttercream tops a moist chocolate cake.
