Betty's Time-Tested Turtle Cake
Betty demonstrates how to make Turtle Cake. This is a delicious cake that is filled with caramel sauce, chocolate chips, and chopped pecans.
Turtle Cake
1 standard-sized box of German Chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed in instructions) 2/3 cup evaporated milk, separated ¼ cup butter, melted 11 ounces to 14 ounces light caramels, unwrapped 6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped pecans cooking oil spray
In a large bowl, prepare the cake mix according to package directions, using the ingredients listed in the instructions. Add 1/3 cup of the evaporated milk and the melted butter. Beat well. Pour one-half of the batter into a 13-inch by 9-inch by 2-inch baking pan that has been sprayed with cooking oil spray. Bake at 350 degrees (F) 15 minutes, until only partially done. While the first half of the batter is baking, make a filling: In a small sauce pan, melt together caramels and the remaining 1/3 cup evaporated milk, stirring constantly until smooth. Pour over partially baked batter and spread until even. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over top of batter. Then sprinkle pecans evenly over all. Pour remaining batter over top and spread until even. Return pan to a 350 degree (F) oven and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Remove cake from oven and cool in pan until just slightly warm or completely cool. Serve by cutting cake into squares of desired size. (To store, cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator.) Enjoy! --Betty :)
