New Orleans: The Cradle of Civilized Drinking
According to time-worn folklore, the cocktail was invented in New Orleans: not just the drink, but the term itself. Whether or not this is true, the Crescent City is indisputably one of the greatest cities in the world with respect to its unparalleled eating and drinking traditions. From the French and Spanish coffee houses and cafés of the 18th century to the saloons, palatial hotels, and absinthe parlors of the 19th, to the brothels, jazz joints, speakeasies, night clubs, cocktail lounges and other world class watering holes of the 20th century and today, New Orleans is the cradle of civilized (and sometimes not so civilized) drinking.
What other city boasts as many signature cocktails as the Big Easy, from the Sazerac to the Ramos Gin Fizz, to the Hurricane to the Vieux Carre, to the La Louisiane to the Grasshopper, to the Milk Punch to the Mint Julep and to dripped absinthe, and the list goes on. Not only that, the city offers a rich array of legendary spirits, from Peychaud’s Bitters to Sazerac Rye, to Herbsaint, to Ojen, and to Southern Comfort. And the rich folklore behind those historic drinking establishments, from the Café des Refugies, Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop and Café des Exiles of the colonial era, to the Sazerac House, Hewlett’s Exchange, Imperial Cabinet, Old Absinthe House, the famous and historic Cave at the Hotel Grunewald, to the Sazerac Bar at the Roosevelt, to the Carousel Lounge at the Monteleone, to the historic bar at Tujague’s, and to the flaming fountain and courtyard at Pat O’Brien’s, the brick and plaster walls of these old places literally drip with history and folklore.
Join Philip Greene, a descendant of the creator of Peychaud’s Bitters, a former Orleanian, a co-founder of the Museum of the American Cocktail, and author of two best-selling cocktail books, on a journey back into New Orleans cocktail history. Learn the true story of the Sazerac Cocktail, the history of Peychaud’s Bitters, about the folklore of Pat O’s the Hurricane, how the Vieux Carre is a reflection of the people of the French Quarter, and why it takes at least six minutes to make a proper Ramos Gin Fizz (and why the Kingfish of Louisiana, Huey Long, insisted on flying his personal bartender to New York City in 1935 to teach the bartenders of Gotham how to make one), and learn how to make all of these drinks at home (while sipping on one or three that Phil will make you!).
In New Orleans, they’ll tell you, laissez les bons temps rouler, let the good times roll, and if you’re looking for a way to do that while learning all about the rich drinking history and folklore of the Crescent City, you need to be at this seminar! Presented by Phil Greene with Chris Hannah and Chris McMillian
