How To make Food For a Hobo Hike
4 cn Tuna (3 oz each)
4 cn Baked beans (6 oz each)
4 Oranges
4 Plastic
4 Bandana clots
4 Children
Place 1 can tuna, 1 can beans, 1 orange, and 1 fork on each banadana. Bring up corners and tie securely. Tie end to children's belt loop or attach to a stick and send them off on their hobo hike. Pack another hobo pouch for yourself and go along. Make sure someone has a Scout knife with a can opener attachment to open cans (much more fun struggling with one of these things than to take a conventional can opener). The oranges serve as both a drink and a dessert. Poke a hole in one end and after all the juice has been sucked out, open it and eat the flesh. The tuna and beans, of course, are eaten just as they come from the can. The bandanas serve as little tablecloths, napkins, and kerchiefs to be worn back home. Children love this hobo picnic--it's easy for you, nutritious, filling, and fun from them. From: The Tuna Cookbook

HOW TO PREP A HOBO DINNER: CAMPFIRE FOIL PACKET MEAL #howto #diy #campfirecooking #thelastboyscouts
Episode 040
COOKING WITH ALUMINUM FOIL ON HOT COALS - AKA: THE HOBO DINNER
The idealistic camp meal--no pots or pans to carry - no utensils to clean afterward. Sound too good to be true? NOPE! Its the not-so-secret method of utilizing aluminum foil as your vessel. Throughout my years as a Scout, and later in life as an avid trout fisherman, aluminum foil was a staple for cooking campfire meals.
For those of you unfamiliar with this technique, here’s what you do. Wrap your foodstuff in a triple thickness of heavy duty foil in such a way to prevent the steam from escaping. Your foodstuff can be any combination of protein, vegetables, etc - as long as you are familiar with its particular need for cook-time. I tend to stick with a combination of ground beef, and diced: potato, onion, carrots, and garlic - seasoned appropriately.
In this episode, I demonstrate a simpler version of creating a Hobo Dinner. When making your own, be as creative as you want with ingredients you know will meld together.
The next episode will cover cooking your meal by place the wrapped package on a bed of hot coals. When cooked, the foil will be my plate!
ADDITIONAL TIPS:
When prepping your pack for a trip to the wilderness, pull an appropriate length of a foil roll out, cut off what you need, fold it up, store it in an appropriate compartment in your pack. You could also prep your foil package at home, ready for cooking in camp, leaving you more time to enjoy the great outdoors.
