Foote Farm in Lisburn, Northern Ireland - Farms to Visit
Foote Farm in Lisburn, Northern Ireland - One of the free annual events that give the public the chance to visit a range of farms across Northern Ireland in order to explore the farm to fork journey of local food - and we have taken the kids there so we could all get a little bit closer to those animals in the farm.
I think this is one of the most creative and useful events ever done in Northern Ireland, which is opening a farm on a specific Saturday and Sunday from June every year to give the public the permission to get inside and see the life in the farm; how the animals are treated and also see those animals which make it to their stomachs at the end of the journey.
What we found out is that the main reason for opening a specific farm is to let people inspect the place, but there are also other things which the farm would be providing, such as places where the kids could play, will give the kids the permission to pat the animals, move them around, and hold them as well and at the same time there is a special programme for schools that let the students come and see how the food is being produced.
This year, the farm that opened it gates was Foote Farm in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and we made a trip to it to enjoy walking through the place and also give the kids the chance to play and know how to deal with animals.
In Foote Farm, we were provided with live entertainment and the kids were even involved in tractor rides and playing some games around. There are different animals inside - the chicken had their very huge space - such as the chicken, the goat, the sheep, the horses, the rabbits, the fell pony and more - we mostly enjoyed the rabbits who were staring right into the camera and also the fell pony.
Usually, the owner of the farm which is open during the year joins the crowd in order to talk about farming, how the animals are cared for, and how the food is produced. As much as people believed that this event gives them the chance to get introduced to the farming community, the farm owners also believe that it is a great way to give the local people the chance to support the locally produced food instead of heading to some other choices.
During our visit to the Foote Farm, we really liked the way they have written the names of the animals on their cages and the way they have written some precautions on the cages of animals who might bite or those who might cause any harm if people tried to reach out for them, play with them, or even pat them wrongly.
From the kids point of view, they were truly amazed by the idea of being in a real farm, getting the chance to play with some animals and play in the area in general, as well as trying to deal and handle them, but for the adults it was more of checking a local farm and understanding the journey of farm to fork and at the same time be more willing to buy those local products produced at the end of the road after witnessing the treatment of the animals and how they are cared for.
The Bank of Ireland open farm weekend started back in 2012 as some kind of celebrating the farmers and the food industry in Northern Ireland by giving the public the chance to come into the farm and see the life inside it. This initiative started to give those who know nothing about the farmers life the chance to know more and at the same time support the local products of the country.
Every single farm event will be a little bit different from the one of the year before because every one is hosted and organised by the host farmer, so things might be different and the activities available might also differ from one place to another - this is an enough reason to convince us to go to this event every year, of course if we can and if the farm will not be that far from our home.
Dealing, feeding, and playing with the animals has always been one of the things that our kids truly enjoy - another reason why we love taking them to such events and places - and that is the same that happened when we took them to Foote Farm which is part of the farm weekends event held every single year in the month of June.
One of the farms which the kids once enjoyed feeding the animals in and eventually getting to the jungle part was Turoe Pet Farm ( and also they once got to enjoy the Open Farm Day in Armagh (
Don't you want to take your kids where the animals are and let them get introduced to the world of farms? Aren't you thinking about giving yourself the chance to know more about farms and how the farmers tend to treat the animals inside, or else know how the food that you tend to eat locally is produced? The annual farm weekends event that is held every June is the place for you and this year when we joined the Foote Farm, we really enjoyed the trip.
If you have been to any of the farms that took part in the event before then tell us more about your experience and the animals you liked.
