How to Make Old Fashioned APPLE PIE Filling for this DELICIOUS Apple Pie! PIE CRUST Recipe Included
Old Fashioned APPLE PIE Filling! This simple apple pie recipe comes from Sunset’s Hostess Handbook for Western Homes. It was submitted by Mrs. V.E.D. from Deming, WA. This cookbook was copyrighted in 1936! This recipe doesn’t specify what type of apple you should use but I would make sure you use a good cooking apple like Granny Smith. You can use your favorite pie crust for this recipe whether that be a homemade one or store bought. Make sure you have two crusts though, one for the bottom and one for the top. This recipe also doesn’t specify how many apples you need so make sure you get enough to fill your pie pan (it also doesn’t specify the size pie pan to use).

Pineapple Meringue Pie:
Blackberry Pie:
Apple Pie Supreme (I used a 9” shallow pie pan)
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
Apples, either halved or quartered (I used 3 large Granny Smith apples)
1 TBSP butter
½ TSP vanilla (you can also use lemon, pineapple, apricot, or peach juice instead of vanilla. Just add a bit more)
1 TSP cornstarch mixed with cold water (I used 1 TBSP of cold water)
Cream (or egg and milk for brushing on pie crust)
Pie crust (enough for bottom and top crust)
Line pie pan with bottom crust. Mix sugar and 1 cup water together in pot on stove. When boiling, add the apples and cook slowly uncovered until the apples are tender. Make sure you don’t move the apples too much or they’ll fall apart. Remove the apples with a slotted spoon when they’re done and lay them neatly in the crust lined pie pan. Add butter and vanilla (or fruit juice) to the syrup. Mix the cornstarch with the cold water and add to syrup. Cook the syrup for several minutes until smooth. Pour the syrup over the apples in the pie pan. Top with a lattice top crust made of ½” wide strips of crust. Brush the top of the crust with either cream or an egg and milk mixture. Bake in a 450F oven for 10 minutes then reduce heat to 350F and finish baking until crust is done.
How To Make Really Good Piecrust (Enough for a 9” double crust pie)
2 ¼ cups flour or 2 ½ cups cake folour
½ TSP salt
2/3 cup cold shortening
About ½ cup cold liquid (you can use water, lemon or orange juice or bouillon for meat pies)
Mix flour and salt and cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add enough liquid until dough comes together. Keep cold.
