Ree's Spicy Molasses Cookies - Like Grandma Used to Make
Ree’s Spicy Molasses Cookies – Like Grandma Used to Make
Recipe By The Pioneer Woman
Here is a direct link of the recipe on the The Pioneer Woman’s Website
We purchased a pair of Share Plates made by Pioneer Woman that had recipes on each plate. These plates are going to be going as gifts, so I thought I would follow the recipe to make these delicious cookies.
This was a pretty easy recipe to follow.
Everyone who ate some said it was some pretty good.
The Pioneer Woman knows her stuff. Great cookies!
I’m not a representative to The Pioneer Woman or any way affiliated with the company. They just make nice stuff, and have great recipes.
This video is a tribute to all Grandmas out there. I recently have gotten ahold of 50 to 100, at least, year old recipes that my Grandma used to prepare for us when we was growing up. My wife also presented me with her Grandma’s / Grandma’s box collection of handwritten recipes, a lot of them without titles. So making many of these cooking videos will be a surprise even to me.
I follow the recipes exactly with no substitutions on ingredients.
Grandmother recipes are the ones you can always relate to. You can eat something and you might say “Like Grandma Used to Make”.
The recipes I have, are from original cookbooks, newspaper cutouts, or good ol’ hand written recipes.

Joe Frogger's Spiced Molasses Cookies ~ Virtual Cookie Exchange ~ Noreen's Kitchen
Virtual Cookie Exchange Playlist:
Today I am excited to bring you the Noreen's Kitchen 2017 Virtual Cookie Exchange! I have been doing this for a few years and this year I am happy to have 8 other awesome channels joining me in this fun collaboration! I will be sharing a historic recipe called Joe Frogger's. This is a highly spiced molasses cookie that has it's roots in the revolutionary war era and has an amazing story attached to it. I love recipes with a good story. They help us learn and keep us rooted in our culture. These cookies will keep you coming back for more and you will see that they stand the test of time!
I will be joined for this virtual cookie exchange by my YouTube friends, Heather of the Kneady Homesteader channel, Shelby of the Queen's Cabinet Channel, Kimmy from She's In Her Apron, Jennifer from The Family Fudge, Falon from Moss Family TV, Tina and Danny from Phillips FamBam, Jamerril from Jamerril's Large Family Table and last but not least, Sara from Simply Sara Kitchen channel. I am honored beyond measure to have them join me for this fun collaboration!
The cookies I am sharing today are a lot of fun to make, but do take some time. They are an eggless cookie that uses molasses and baking soda as the leavening. They are large, flat and chewy, but moist and flavorful. To me the are the ultimate Christmas cookie and they are steeped in history. I share in the video where they hail from and how they came to be.
These cookies take at least two days. You will make the cookies on one day and roll, cut and bake another. They are flavored with rum but the alcohol bakes out during the cooking, leaving the flavor of rich, rum throughout the cookie. Truly a colonial classic. This reminds me of old fashioned gingerbread that I remember tasting at a historic site when I was a child. Nothing like the cloyingly sweet versions many people love today. The molasses mixed with the baking soda is kitchen alchemy at it's best, making these cookies last long enough for an ocean voyage, but in our case at least a week or two but they won't last that long!
I hope you give these delicious Joe Frogger's, spiced molasses cookies a try! I also hope you will take the time to use the link to visit the playlist I have compiled with all the virtual cookie exchange participants! Let it run, enjoy the ride and then enjoy the recipes in the coming weeks preparing them for friends and family during this festive season!
I hope you try them all and I hope you love them all!
Happy Eating and Happy Holidays!

CHEWY, FALL SPICE MOLASSES COOKIES W/ GLAZE
You are going to love these cookies! Not because they are so simple to make, but because they are so incredibly delicious! Warm fall spices of cinnamon, ginger and cloves combined with molasses makes a winning combination! My neighbor, many years ago, shared this wonderful recipe with me and it has been a family favorite ever since. I hope you try them!
CHEWY MOLASSES COOKIES
3/4 cup any unflavored vegetable oil
1/4 cup regular molasses ( not blackstrap)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
METHOD
1) In a medium bowl, combine vegetable oil, molasses, sugar and egg. Stir until well combined with a wooden spoon or whisk.
2) Add flour, baking soda, spices and salt and mix well to incorporate all the dry ingredients. Batter will be stiff.
3) Refrigerate at least one hour.
4) Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
5) Roll into large balls the size of a walnut ( or smaller if you prefer) and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Cookies spread so leave room for this!
6) Bake for 9-10 minutes, or until they have spread, browned lightly, and have crackled tops.
7) Cool on baking sheet.
GLAZE
2 cups powdered sugar
1-2 tablespoons water
Fresh lemon juice from 1 lemon
In a bowl, add most of the water to powdered sugar and stir. It should be lumpy and a bit dry. Add and mix enough lemon juice to make a smooth
drizzling consistency. Using a spoon, drizzle glaze over cookies, going in one direction.
If you prefer, you may roll unbaked cookie balls in sugar and skip the glaze.
ENJOY!
Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart.....
