Ree’s Spicy Molasses Cookies – Like Grandma Used to Make
Recipe By The Pioneer Woman
Here is a direct link of the recipe on the The Pioneer Woman’s Website
We purchased a pair of Share Plates made by Pioneer Woman that had recipes on each plate. These plates are going to be going as gifts, so I thought I would follow the recipe to make these delicious cookies.
This was a pretty easy recipe to follow.
Everyone who ate some said it was some pretty good.
The Pioneer Woman knows her stuff. Great cookies!
I’m not a representative to The Pioneer Woman or any way affiliated with the company. They just make nice stuff, and have great recipes.
This video is a tribute to all Grandmas out there. I recently have gotten ahold of 50 to 100, at least, year old recipes that my Grandma used to prepare for us when we was growing up. My wife also presented me with her Grandma’s / Grandma’s box collection of handwritten recipes, a lot of them without titles. So making many of these cooking videos will be a surprise even to me.
I follow the recipes exactly with no substitutions on ingredients.
Grandmother recipes are the ones you can always relate to. You can eat something and you might say “Like Grandma Used to Make”.
The recipes I have, are from original cookbooks, newspaper cutouts, or good ol’ hand written recipes.

BEST EVER GINGER MOLASSES COOKIES (BETTER THAN STARBUCKS!)
Ingredients
* 1 1/4 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
* 2 cups white sugar
* 2 eggs
* 1/2 cup molasses
* 4 cups all purpose flour
* 1/2 tsp salt
* 4 tsp baking soda
* 2 tsp ground cinnamon
* 1 tsp grated fresh ginger or powdered ginger
* 1/2 tsp ground cloves
* 1/3 cup white sugar for rolling
Instructions
* Add the butter to the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Cream the butter on medium high speed until it is soft and creamy and the colour begins to turn pale (use a hand mixer if you wish).
* Add the sugar and beat on medium high speed for 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl a few times.
* Beat in the eggs on medium high speed one at a time, scraping down the bowl after each addition.
* Beat in the molasses and scrape down the bowl to ensure everything is evenly combined.
* In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, grated ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Whisk these ingredients together to they're combined and dump the mixture into the bowl of the stand mixer with the butter mixture.
* Combine the butter mixture and the dry ingredients on low speed just until no streaks of flour remain. You'll have to scrape down the sides of the bowl a few times to make sure everything is incorporated.
* Cover the dough with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for one hour.
* After one hour has passed, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
* Remove the dough from the fridge and shape it into about 36 balls with your hands, rolling each ball of dough in the white sugar and placing it on a baking sheet prepared with some parchment paper. Remember to space the cookies out appropriately...this recipe makes about 3 dozen cookies so you'll likely need to bake 3 or more sheets of cookies.
* Bake each sheet of cookies for 10-11 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
* When you remove the baking sheet from the oven, let the cookies cool on the baking sheet until they've cooled almost completely. This will help them achieve that soft and chewy texture as they continue to bake on the inside even after they've been removed from the oven.

***RECIPE, MAKES ONE LOAF ***
(Based on an old Joy of Cooking recipe)
1 cup (237 mL) milk or water
1/2 cup (118 mL) mollasses
1/2 cup (118 mL) honey
1/2 cup (one stick, 113g) butter
1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
1 egg
2 1/2 cups (300g) all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt (maybe 3/4 if using unsalted butter)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons ground ginger (use half if you don't want it very spicy)
a little finely-ground black pepper
Get your oven heating to 350ºF/180ºC. Prepare a 5x9 in (13x23 cm) loaf pan (or really any mid-size cake pan) by either greasing the inside or lining it with a parchment sling.
Pour the milk/water into a microwave-safe measuring jug, along with the molasses and honey. Drop in the butter in chunks. Microwave until the butter chunks are halfway melted, stir, and let them keep melting while you measure out the dry ingredients.
Put the flour in a mixing bowl along with the salt, baking powder and spices. Whisk to combine and fluff up the flour.
The butter should be melted now — put the sugar in with the wet ingredients along with the egg and stir until smooth. Pour the wet mixture into the dry and whisk until just smooth.
Pour into the cake pan and bake for about an hour until done inside. The top usually looks a hair raw when the inside is perfect.
How to Make Spicy Molasses Cookies | The Pioneer Woman - Ree Drummond Recipes
This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas cookie recipes: spicy molasses cookies. They are so dang rich, chewy, and flavorful… and the best of all, when they're baking, they fill the kitchen with the scent of apple cider! Trust me, it's really uncanny.
I've made these before with just a hint of chopped fresh ginger added to the dough, and it makes them almost too delicious for words. But the basic recipe is wonderful, too—give it a try both ways! Put them on your Christmas cookie plates and wrap them up and gift them to your neighbors, but save some for Santa.
Try these fun variations:
1. Drizzle melted white chocolate in decorative stripes over the top of each cookie. Allow to harden before serving. Or: dip half of each cookie in melted white chocolate. Yum.
2. Roll the cookie dough in gold, sparkling sugar instead of granulated sugar before baking. Crunchy, sweet, and sparkly!
3. Make sandwiches using two cookies and a scoop of cinnamon ice cream. Yikes.
4. Eat at all the cookies yourself, then hide all the evidence.
What spices go well with molasses?
Anything sort of warm spice like you'd find in gingerbread. Cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom... you get the picture.
What's the difference between spicy molasses cookies and gingerbread cookies?
It's really all about the texture, because they contain most of the same ingredients. Gingerbread is usually firmer and snappier. Molasses cookies are rich, softer, and chewier.

Directions
1
Preheat oven to 350°F.
2
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, mix the sugar, shortening, molasses, and egg together until well combined. Add the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom, and salt. Lightly stir to combine the dry ingredients, then mix until the dough is combined.
3
Using your hands, roll the dough into walnut-sized balls, then generously coat each ball with sugar. Place the balls on a baking sheet and bake for 9 to 11 minutes, allowing the cookies to bake about 1 minute more after they begin to crack.
4
Remove the cookies from the baking sheet and allow to cool, though these are delicious while still warm.
