Crockpot French Onion Soup Recipe, so easy, and just like the restaurant!
Crock Pot French Onion Soup Recipe is so easy to make, and it tastes just like the restaurant version! YUMMM. Making this in slow cooker really simplifies the process, and the result is just as good. I love French Onion Soup with a side salad or a starter for a meal. Be sure to listen to the video for substitution and preparation tips.
Recipe is as follows;
3 pounds onions (sliced) - use what you have a variety is fine
3 Tablespoons of Butter
Salt and Pepper to taste
Place the onions, butter, and salt/pepper in the crock pot on low for 10-12 hours.
Then add;
7 Cups of Beef Broth
1 Cup of Red Wine
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tablespoon Vinegar (choose from basaltic, red wine, or rice vinegar)
1/2 Teaspoon dried Thyme
Cook another 2-4 hours on low in slow cooker.
Then serve into oven proof dishes and to the top add;
Croutons (a light covering over the top - see the video for details)
Cheese - slices or shredded - provolone, mozzarella, or swiss is best. (You can also do a combination of cheese - see the video for details)
Finally broil in the oven to melt the cheese:)

Here's the Recipe for the Perfect Classic Onion Soup
Ingredients
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp olive oil
6 medium yellow onion
2 cloves garlic
2 fresh thyme sprigs
Salt and black pepper
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp flour
1 cup pulled/shredded beef
8-9 cups beef broth
1 baguette, sliced
1 cup grated Gruyere or Mozzarella
Bread bowl (optional)
Instructions:
In a large Dutch oven or pot, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions and fresh thyme and cook by stirring occasionally until the onions are soft and caramelized for about 20-25 min.
Add garlic, flour, Worcestershire sauce, and pulled beef and continue to cook by stirring occasionally for another 10 min.
Add beef broth, salt, and pepper. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the soup to a simmer. Cook for 10-12 min.
While the soup is simmering, preheat the oven to 450F and line sliced bread on a baking sheet, drizzle both sides of the baguette slices lightly with olive oil. Toast until lightly brown for 4-5 min.
Ladle the soup in a bread (or a regular) bowl.
Add a slice of bread onto the top of each bowl of soup and top with the gruyere cheese (or mozzarella if you prefer mild cheese). Switch the oven to broil and broil the bowl of soups until the cheese bubbles and is lightly brown.
Serve warm.
If you use bread bowl, you should serve it immediately before the bread soaks too much soup.

Slow Cooker French Onion Soup ????????????
SLOW COOKER FRENCH ONION SOUP
--------------Click on SHOW MORE to see the FULL RECIPE--------------
This recipe may take some time to put together but is worth every minute. We used to serve this at Marie Callender's, and I miss it so much.
PRINTABLE RECIPE AND NUTRITIONAL VALUES:
RECIPE:
INGREDIENTS:
1 stick butter
5 sweet yellow onions, sliced
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 cup flour
64 oz. beef broth (two 32-oz. containers)
1 tsp. sugar (optional) I only use this if my onions aren't labeled sweet onions
2 tsp. minced garlic
1/4 tsp. dried thyme (not ground)
1/4 tsp. dried oregano (not ground)
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
1 bay leaf
For serving (not included in nutritional count):
1 baguette
olive oil
1 whole garlic clove
sliced swiss cheese (can use provolone or gruyere) (about 2 slices needed per serving)
shredded parmesan cheese (use about 1 tablespoon per serving)
SLOW COOKER SIZE:
5-QUART OR LARGER
INSTRUCTIONS:
In a large skillet set to medium-high heat, add the butter. When the butter is melted add the sliced onions. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Saute the onion until browned and caramelized. This will take about 10 minutes. Stir often. Adjust the heat if they start to burn.
When the onions are done cooking add the flour to the butter and onions. Cook for 2 more minutes.
Add the floured onions to the slow cooker. Add the beef broth, sugar (if using), garlic, thyme, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, and balsamic vinegar. Stir well. Add the bay leaf on top.
Cook on HIGH for 4 hours or LOW for 8 hours.
Remove bay leaf before serving.
How to make the homemade croutons:
Preheat the oven to 500 degrees (broil).
Cut a baguette into 1/4 inch slices. Place slices on a sheet pan.
Using a pastry brush, brush olive oil onto the slices.
Place the sheet pan under the broiler. Cook for about 3-5 minutes or until browned and toasty.
Cut a garlic clove tip off and rub each piece of cooked bread with it. This will give the bread garlic flavor.
How to assemble the bowls of soup:
Fill an ovenproof bowl with the French Onion Soup broth. Place the bowl in a pie tin or on a sheet pan. (You can make more than one bowl at a time).
Add the homemade croutons (or store-bought) on top of the soup.
Place 1-2 pieces of swiss cheese (can use provolone or gruyere) and sprinkle on parmesan cheese.
Broil until the cheese starts to brown and is bubbly.
