This dish was a favorite at my parents’ old restaurant, and it’s often found on most Chinese takeout menus.
As popular as hot and sour soup is, interestingly, this wasn’t something my parents ate growing up in Guangzhou. As with a lot of Chinese dishes, the origin (or origins), are hard to pinpoint, but it’s likely further north where the weather is colder and the flavors are more heat-inducing.
Our friends at Chinese Cooking Demystified also have a great write up on this in their own version of Hot and Sour Soup.
Regardless of where the dish came from, it’s a perfect soup for a cold winter day that’s equal parts spicy and soothing.

Sweet & Sour Veg soup
Ingredients
Cabbage - 1 cup (finely chopped)
Carrot - 1 cup (finely chopped)
Green Bell peppers - 1/2 chopped
Yellow Bell peppers - 1/2 chopped
A few Spring onion chopped
A few Celery chopped
A few Garlic cloves chopped
Green chilli - 2
Sugar - 2 tbsp
Salt to taste
Pepper - 1 tsp
Corn flour - 1 tbsp
Soy sauce - 2 tsp
Water - 3 cups
Olive oil - 1 tbsp
Method:
1. In a Deep wide pan add olive oil, green chilli, garlic & saute it for a minute.
2. Add all the chopped vegetables one after the other Spring onion, Cabbage, Carrot, Celery, Green Bell pepper, Yellow Bell pepper & saute it for a few minutes.
3. Now add Salt, Pepper, Sugar & mix it. Add enough water to cover all the vegetables. You can add vegetable stock also. Let it boil for a few minutes.
4. Dilute a corn flour in a water, it acts as a thickening agent, so pour it in the soup and mix it.
5. Add Soy sauce, Spring onion stock & turn off the stove.
6. The whole some Sweet & Sour Veg soup is ready to serve.

Water (വെള്ളം) - 5 Cups (1250 ml)
Onion (സവോള) - 1 No (Medium Size)
Carrot (ക്യാരറ്റ്) - ½ of one
Crushed Ginger (ഇഞ്ചി ചതച്ചത്) - 1 Inch Piece
Crushed Garlic (വെളുത്തുള്ളി ചതച്ചത്) - 2 Cloves
Chicken (ചിക്കൻ) - 200 gm
Salt (ഉപ്പ്) - ½ + ½ Teaspoon
Crushed Black Pepper (കുരുമുളക് ചതച്ചത്) - ½ + ½ Teaspoon
Egg (മുട്ട) - 1 No
Corn Flour (ചോളം പൊടി) - 2 Tablespoons
Refined Oil (എണ്ണ) - 1 Tablespoon
Finely Chopped Garlic (വെളുത്തുള്ളി ചെറുതായി അരിഞ്ഞത്) - 1 Tablespoon
Spring Onion Bulb (white part) - 3 Tablespoons
Carrot (ക്യാരറ്റ്) - ¼ Cup (Chopped)
